Position Overview

The Manager, Individual Giving is a key member of the Development Team and lead all aspects of our individual giving strategy. Bring a community-centric fundraising mindset and tactics to build trusting partnerships with donors and center our community of students, schools and AmeriCorps members in funding strategy and donor engagement activities. Own and lead strategies to grow the individual giving pipeline through annual giving and mid-level giving programs. Partner with others on the development team to utilize small scale donor engagement events.

Job Description

The Manager of Individual Giving is responsible for supporting the mid-level individual giving portfolio, partnering with site leadership and the development team to research, identify, cultivate, solicit, and steward individual donors. Their focus will be on managing the mid-level giving program through engaging and growing a portfolio of individual donors, managing the individual giving pipeline and operations, providing special event support and other individual stewardship activities, and offering staff leadership to the Associate Board. Their specific focus will be on building a program for cultivating and stewarding the individual donor base for City Year DC in order to raise increased resources, and ultimately, serve more students in Washington, DC. This position will report to the Managing Director of Development. 

Responsibilities 

Individual Donor Development and Pipeline Management – 30% 

  • Build relationships with new, current, and lapsed individual donors ($1,000 - $10,000) to renew their commitment to City Year DC, raising $150,000+ through the Individual Giving portfolio in support of FY25 team-wide private revenue goal of $1.2M 

  • Manage a portfolio of at least 100 individual donors (with an expectation of significant portfolio and revenue growth each year) through cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship, participating in meetings, calls, and regular communications to donors and prospects 

  • Re-Launch and manage City Year DC’s two giving circles (Alumni Community Circle and Leadership Circle), promoting membership in the mid-level and major donor society programs (Red Jacket Society), and encouraging individual donors to invest $1,000+ in City Year 

  • Ensure clear and timely records and call reports to support overall development operations and track prospects, donor giving, notes, and assist in the maintenance of an accurate donor database 

 

Donor Cultivation and Stewardship Activities – 30% 

  • Implement a high-quality stewardship program that engages, recognizes, and thanks supporters, strengthening their relationship with the organization through consistent and tailored communications 

  • Develop effective communication and engagement materials based on City Year’s mission and vision, conveying impact alongside the Managing Directors of Development and External Affairs 

  • Collaborate on site-wide development and external events, with a focus on building opportunities for individual donors to engage, including at least two major signature events and multiple small-scale cultivation events throughout the year 

  • Attend meetings and networking events, building connections with current, lapsed, and prospective individual donors 

  • Recommend and implement stewardship best practices including thank you cards, invitations, and additional recognition components 

 

Prospect Research and Operations – 20% 

  • Lead individual giving prospect research, tracking new opportunities and solicitations in Salesforce and working with the Managing Director of Development to qualify new prospects that come through board members, meetings, and individual research 

  • Build strategies to research, qualify, track, and connect through relationships within the City Year networks, including board, AmeriCorps members, alumni, and event attendees 

  • Manage individual gift processing, ensuring all gifts are acknowledged in a timely manner  

 

Associate Board Management Support - 10% 

  • Support management of and fund development opportunities within the Associate Board alongside the Managing Director of External Affairs 

  • Support Associate Board activities, including meeting preparation, solicitation support, and maintaining a continued focus on communication and stewardship 

 

Organizational Initiatives and Site Support – 10% 

  • Work closely with the Development team to understand priorities and revenue goals, supporting strategies and initiatives to meet the team’s needs 

  • Collaborate with other site departments, City Year’s Headquarters team, and other City Year sites to increase individual fundraising knowledge and capabilities 

  • Support site and board leadership when applicable to solicit major gifts through meeting preparation and collateral creation 

  • Engage in structured discussion and training on diversity, inclusion, equity, and belonging aimed at developing stronger cultural competency, both individually and collectively as a site

Skills, Knowledge, and Experiences:  

  • 2 - 5 years of relevant professional experience in nonprofit fundraising with a focus on individual donor management and/or relationship cultivation, with proven ability to deliver strong, measurable results  

  • Outstanding ability to communicate with diverse audiences verbally, in writing, and via presentation 

  • Ability to develop and maintain strong relationships with City Year team, advisory board members, and current and prospective donors. 

  • Experience with database management (Salesforce preferred) and individual donor prospect research 

  • Familiarity with design tools like Canva, Illustrator, InDesign or similar applications to create fundraising collateral 

  • Highly organized with a strong attention to detail 

  • Efficient time management skills; ability to meet deadlines and prioritize multiple projects in a fast-paced environment 

  • Knowledge of Washington DC donor community preferred 

  • Awareness of, commitment to, and experience with workplace practices grounded in diversity, belonging, inclusion, and equity (DBIE)
