Scotts Miracle-Gro is seeking an experienced Income Tax Manager to lead the company’s income tax compliance function. This role will be responsible for managing federal, state, and local income tax compliance, overseeing audits, and ensuring tax liabilities are minimized through effective planning and application of available credits and incentives. The Income Tax Manager will work closely with internal and external stakeholders to ensure compliance with applicable tax laws while optimizing tax strategies.

This person will work a hybrid model out of our global headquarters in Marysville, OH.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Income Tax Compliance & Reporting:

    • Lead and oversee the preparation and review of federal, state, and local income and franchise tax returns.

    • Maintain timely and accurate filing of estimated tax payments and extensions.

    • Manage tax compliance process including assignments and timelines.

    • Ensure compliance with global information reporting and transfer pricing documentation requirements.

  • Tax Planning & Strategy:

    • Identify and apply tax-saving opportunities, including exemptions, credits, and abatements.

    • Support tax research and planning initiatives in coordination with tax leadership.

    • Assist in implementing tax strategies to optimize the company’s overall tax position.

  • Tax Audits & Controversy Management:

    • Manage federal, state, and local income tax audits, including negotiation of settlements.

    • Assess and recommend actions regarding appeals or litigation for tax disputes.

    • Stay current with evolving tax laws, court decisions, and administrative rulings to ensure compliance and identify tax savings opportunities.

  • Tax Accounting & Internal Controls:

    • Provide quarterly and annual support for tax accounting, including tax provision (ASC 740) and tax return-to-provision reconciliation.

    • Ensure accurate input into tax accounting software and oversee related journal entries.

    • Maintain strong internal controls and ensure compliance with Sarbanes-Oxley (SOX) Section 404 requirements.

  • Team Leadership & Development:

    • Oversee and mentor tax associates, providing on-the-job training and career development.

    • Manage workloads, deadlines, and resource allocation within the tax team.

    • Foster a culture of continuous improvement and professional growth within the tax function.

Qualifications & Requirements:

  • Education & Certification:

    • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.

    • CPA, MST, or equivalent preferred.

  • Experience:

    • 5+ years of relevant income tax experience, preferably in a corporate tax department or public accounting firm.

    • Strong knowledge of U.S. federal and state income tax laws, compliance, and ASC 740 tax accounting.

    • Experience managing tax audits and controversies preferred.

  • Skills & Competencies:

    • Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and organizational skills.

    • Strong leadership and team development abilities.

    • Effective communication and ability to collaborate across departments.

    • Proficiency in tax compliance and accounting software.

The starting budgeted pay range for this role will generally fall between $125,000.00 - $147,100.00 per year. Scotts will consider various factors in determining the actual pay including your skills, qualifications, experience, and geographical location.In addition to the determined base salary, this role is also incentive eligible under our corporate bonus programs.For remote roles where the final candidate resides in Alaska, California, Colorado, Illinois, New York, Oregon or Washington, state required pay thresholds will be factored into base salary.
