The Role

Cook Inlet Region, Inc is seeking a talented Human Resources Business Partner to join our HR team.

Cook Inlet Region, Inc., also known as CIRI, is one of 12 land-based Alaska Native regional corporations created pursuant to the Alaska Native Claims Settlement Act (ANCSA). CIRI’s regional boundaries roughly follow the traditional Dena’ina territory of Southcentral Alaska. CIRI was incorporated on June 8, 1972, and is owned today by a diverse group of more than 9,500 Shareholders who live in Alaska and throughout the world.

This position is based in Anchorage, AK but offers a fully remote schedule for candidates who live outside of Alaska. Remote employees may be required to travel to the corporate office on a regular schedule. For candidates who are based in Anchorage, AK, CIRI offers a hybrid work schedule.

General Function

In alignment with CIRI’s mission and values, the Human Resources Business Partner serves in professional capacity overseeing the HR functions and managing a team who administer human resources transaction functions of assigned companies and/or government contracts within the CIRI enterprise. The Human Resources Business Partner is an SME in recruitment, HRIS, employee relations, labor relations, performance management, FMLA, ADA, as well as state, federal and government contracting compliance.

Major Activities (Typical Duties/Responsibilities)

  1. In conjunction with the Senior Director, Human Resources, manage employee relations, labor relations and performance concerns as well as provide sound guidance to all levels of the company.
  2. Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local employment laws and regulations and government contractor, 8(a) and FAR regulations; communicate and implement best practices.
  3. Organize and manage company or government contract transition plans, ensuring:
    1. Organized transition timeline
    2. Effective incoming employee communication
    3. Compliant and effective recruitment and pre-employment strategy
    4. Coordinated onboarding process to include branded forms and handbooks
  4. Assist in developing and implementing HR strategies and initiatives aligned with the overall business strategy.
  5. Administer employee training and development programs:
    1. Create, facilitate and execute company-wide training initiatives and maintain company-wide training calendar
    2. HRIS and system coordination
    3. Assist with sourcing trainings upon request
    4. Facilitate manager lunch and learn program
    5. Administer employee development programs
  6. Administer employee performance management program.
  7. Administer FMLA and ADA programs.
  8. Effectively and accurately communicate company policies and procedures.
  9. Compile HR related metrics.
  10. Assist with employee recognition program.
  11. Provide back-up support to recruitment as needed including drafting job descriptions and interview questions, attending interviews, and onboarding.
  12. Perform other duties and special projects as assigned.

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities

  • Understand CIRI’s mission, values, vision, and strategic focus areas and incorporates knowledge into daily activities.
  • Intermediate knowledge of general human resources functions, best practices and regulations.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills; ability to work effectively and cooperatively with all levels of management and staff, affiliated-company employees as well as outside business associates; exhibits a professional manner in dealing with others.

  • Ability to research and organize information with particular attention to accuracy and detail.
  • Proficient using Microsoft Office products, such as Word, Excel, PowerPoint and industry-standard computer software and databases.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, including thorough knowledge of proper grammar, advanced vocabulary, spelling, editing and proofreading skills.
  • Ability to make decisions, solve problems and exercise excellent judgment.
  • Superior organizational, follow-up and detail-oriented skills.
  • Excellent customer service skills.
  • Knowledge of ANCSA corporations and the businesses and activities of CIRI, its subsidiaries and its non-profit agencies.
  • High degree of sensitivity regarding confidential information.

Physical Abilities

  • Sufficient fine motor skills for use of computers, with an ability to withstand repetitive keyboarding for extended periods of time.
  • Ability to kneel, bend and twist at the waist on an occasional basis.
  • Visual and communication ability adequate to perform the essential functions of the job.
  • Ability to reach below shoulder height with regular frequency (desk position) and at or above shoulder height on occasion.
  • Ability to push, pull, carry and lift objects weighing up to 20 pounds on an occasional basis.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources, Business or other related field; degree may be substituted for two additional years’ human resources experience
  • Five years’ Human Resources experience illustrating strong experience in two or more functional areas
  • Two years’ supervisory experience
  • Two years of government contract related experience
  • PHR preferred
  • Work experience with for-profit or Alaska Native Corporations strongly preferred
  • Ability to pass a background screening
