FLSA STATUS: Hourly, Part-Time, Non-Exempt 

COMPENSATION: $23 per hour 

LOCATION: 170 N. Dearborn St., Chicago, IL, 60601 

 

POSITION SUMMARY: The House Manager is responsible for supervising Goodman Theatre’s Front of House operation and serves as the main public contact for patrons, visitors, and staff during scheduled performances and events. This role manages on-shift bartenders, gift store associates, coat check attendants, and other support roles. Additionally, this role ensures the overall safety of guests and staff before, during and after the performance in collaboration with Goodman Theatre’s Guest Services and Facilities department, as well as a third-party security team. This position offers additional administrative support to the Front of House department as needed.  

 

This is a part-time, hourly position, with availability requirements; this includes a mix of afternoons, evenings, (M-F/Sat/Sun), and weekend shifts typically from 11:30am-6pm (matinee performances) and 5pm-12am (eve performances). Some later evenings are required due to special event scheduling. Candidates must be available for either the week of Thanksgiving or Christmas holidays during Goodman's annual production of A Christmas Carol.  

 

RESPONSIBILITIES: 

  • Serve as the main representative for the Front of House Department and Goodman Theatre at all assigned performances and events, offering superb customer service to all who enter the building  

  • Supervise and support the Front of House staff for assigned performances, internal/external rentals and other special events  

  • Ensure cleanliness and timely maintenance of all Front of House areas prior to patron arrival times, as well at the end of each performance shift  

  • Maintain the supply of playbills, stuffers, and additional marketing materials for patrons and visitors as designated by the Front of House Director  

  • Oversee daily distribution/reconciliation of cash banks (bars and gift store) and record-keeping of credit card tips for Front of House staff  

  • Ensure that Goodman patrons have a superior experience at the theatre  

  • Assist with routine inventory tracking for the Goodman Theatre Bar areas and Gift Store  

  • Perform other Front of House and Event support roles as assigned to support the overall FOH operation.  

 

QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE: 

  • At least two years of experience working in customer service: ideally in the special events or performing arts fields. Supervisory experience is strongly preferred.   
  • Ability to communicate and work effectively in a team setting with diplomacy, tact, friendliness, poise, and authority.  

  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and solve problems critically.   

  • Experience working with a point-of-sale system (Toast preferred)  

  • CPR/First Aid certification required (or willingness to obtain if hired)  

  • Basset Certification required (or willingness to obtain if hired)  

  • Experience in a union setting beneficial  

  • May be required to stand for extended periods of time and be able to lift program boxes and other equipment as needed (approx. 40lbs)  

  • Can submit availability for no less than 4 shifts (approximately 20-25 hours based on show/event run times) per week. One shift per week must fall on a Saturday or Sunday performance.
