Job Description

The Highway Designer (mid-level) supports the delivery of transportation infrastructure projects across Toronto, Ontario, Canada, and alternate locations in Ottawa and Kingston. This role operates within a multidisciplinary engineering environment focused on highway and roadway systems, contributing to design development, technical documentation, and project coordination activities across planning, preliminary design, and detailed design phases.

The position involves working on provincial and municipal roadway projects, requiring alignment with regulatory standards including those established by the Ontario Ministry of Transportation. Responsibilities span geometric design, traffic considerations, and constructability reviews, with involvement in stakeholder coordination and field data validation. The ideal candidate brings 5+ years of experience in highway design, proficiency in industry software, and demonstrated exposure to transportation projects within the Canadian regulatory context.

  • Develop geometric highway design models and engineering drawings using AutoCAD Civil 3D and Open Roads Designer
  • Prepare plans, profiles, and cross-sections aligned with transportation design standards
  • Perform traffic flow analysis and integrate roadway safety measures into design solutions
  • Coordinate with multidisciplinary teams to support integrated infrastructure delivery
  • Interpret and apply MTO and national highway design regulations in project execution
  • Conduct site inspections and field investigations to collect design inputs
  • Generate cost estimates and tender documentation for construction procurement
  • Support stakeholder meetings and technical presentations with design outputs
  • Contribute to environmental impact assessments and regulatory documentation
  • Mentor junior staff through technical guidance and design reviews

Qualifications

Required

  • College diploma in Civil Engineering Technology or equivalent
  • Minimum 5 years of highway design experience
  • Proficiency in:
    • InRoads / Open Roads Designer
    • AutoCAD Civil 3D
  • Strong knowledge of Ontario highway design standards, including MTO requirements
  • Experience with traffic analysis and roadway safety design
  • Familiarity with environmental impact assessment processes
  • Valid driver’s license with ability to attend site visits
  • Strong analytical, technical writing, and communication skills

Assets

  • Project experience on MTO-regulated transportation projects
  • Exposure to multi-modal transportation systems (e.g., transit corridors)
  • Experience supporting major infrastructure projects or corridor studies
  • Prior involvement in design-build or alternative delivery models
  • Demonstrated mentorship or leadership experience
