Heating Engineer

Location:Cambridge

Salary: Up to £40,000 per annum plus company vehicle and fuel card

Contract Type: Full time – Permanent, 42.5hrs per week, Monday to Friday

About the Role

We’re looking for a skilled and safety‑conscious Heating Engineer to join our Gas Safe–accredited contract in Cambridge, delivering high‑quality servicing, repairs, and installations of domestic heating systems across our clients’ housing stock.

This role is focused primarily on boilers and wet heating systems, ensuring all works are completed safely, compliantly, and to a high standard within occupied properties. Accuracy, attention to detail, and a strong commitment to gas safety are essential, as your work directly impacts the comfort and wellbeing of residents. You’ll work independently and as part of a wider team, maintaining excellent customer service and professional standards at all times.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Service, repair, and install domestic boilers and associated heating systems
  • Diagnose heating system faults and complete remedial works efficiently and safely
  • Carry out landlord gas safety inspections and issue Gas Safety Records (CP12s)
  • Ensure all works comply with Gas Safe regulations, manufacturer guidance, and internal procedures
  • Respond to heating breakdowns and emergency repairs in line with contract SLAs
  • Accurately record works completed using handheld devices or job management systems
  • Communicate clearly with tenants, housing officers, and internal teams
  • Maintain van stock levels and order heating components and materials as required
  • Identify and report safeguarding concerns or property hazards
  • Work collaboratively with other trades where heating works form part of wider repairs
  • Attend toolbox talks, training sessions, and safety briefings
  • Ensure PPE is worn and health & safety procedures are followed at all times
  • Support apprentices or junior engineers where required

Key Criteria:

  • City & Guilds or NVQ Level 3 in Plumbing & Heating or Gas Installation
  • Valid ACS certification (e.g. CCN1, CENWAT, HTR1)
  • Strong experience in domestic boiler servicing, fault diagnosis, and installation
  • Good understanding of wet heating systems, controls, and components
  • Sound knowledge of current gas safety legislation and compliance standards
  • Experience working within social housing or local authority environments (preferred)
  • Excellent customer service and communication skills
  • Ability to work independently and manage workload effectively
  • Confident using handheld devices and digital job management systems
  • Strong attention to detail with a safety‑first approach
  • Flexible to travel across the Cambridge area and participate in out‑of‑hours call‑outs
  • Full UK driving licence

To drive a Mears vehicle, you must be aged over 21 have held your licence over 3 months and have less than 9 points.
