Position Title: Headmaster

Location: Great Hearts Arlington Upper School (6701 S Cooper St, Arlington, TX 76001)

Position Summary: A Great Hearts headmaster heroically shapes his or her community for a greater good. He or she takes on one of the most important leadership positions in our culture, turning a generation of young hearts and minds towards truth, goodness, and beauty. Duties and Responsibilities:

• Applies the standard policies and administrative regulations of a Great Hearts Academy and those established by the local Board of Directors, in accordance with all federal, state, and local regulations.
• Interprets the mission and goals of a Great Hearts Academy to the students, parents, teachers, and community.
• Develops, at the direction of the Superintendent and/or local Board of Directors, policies and procedures for the effective functioning of all aspects of the life of the Academy.
• With Great Hearts Home Office Staff, advertises for, recruits, interviews and recommends to the Great Hearts and the local board faculty and staff for employment.
• Supervises and annually evaluates faculty and staff.
• Assures the adherence of the faculty and staff to the curricular goals and objectives of the Academy and contributes to curriculum development with faculty members and Great Hearts Home Office Staff.
• Participates in periodic Great Hearts professional development activities with other Heads of School and the faculty of other academies at the direction of the Superintendent.
• With Great Hearts Home Office Staff, provides for and directs professional development opportunities for the staff.
• With Great Hearts Home Office Staff, runs an annual orientation program for all teachers.
• As necessary, teaches a course or courses.
• Assists, when necessary, in substituting for absent teachers.
• Schedules, attends, and leads faculty meetings, as well as Open House, Curriculum Night and other community meetings.
• Advertises, recruits, interviews and enrolls students in the school.
• Provides for the safe and orderly environment of the school by establishing and maintaining standards of conduct.
• Communicates regularly with the parents and the "community of learners” via a regular newsletter and updated website.
• Supervises the maintenance and development of the school buildings and grounds.
• Administers and manages the annual budget as adopted by Great Hearts Texas and the local Board of Directors.
• Directs assigned Great Hearts finance staff to achieve financial goals.
• Works with Great Hearts finance staff to maintain accurate and updated income statements, balance sheet, and statement of cash flow.
• Ensures compliance with all Federal and State regulations related to all financial matters, including but not limited to payroll, purchasing and Federal and State filings.
• With Great Hearts finance staff, provides accurate monthly reports—expenditures list, monthly and YTD comparisons to approved budget, balance sheet, statement of cash flow and bank reconciliation approvals—to the Great Hearts Home Office and the local Board of Directors.
• Purchases supplies, materials, fixed assets and services for the schools in accordance with Great Hearts policies, audit guidelines, and all Federal and State regulations.
• With Great Hearts finance staff, quarterly reviews and approves fixed asset purchases, related depreciation.
• With Great Hearts finance staff, prepares the annual budget for submission for approval to the Great Hearts corporate office and the local Board of Directors.
• Manages annual budget by tracking income/expenses, and identifies, develops, and implements budget mitigation plans for over-expense items during the year.
• Ensures timely reporting of all data and reports to the TEA as guided by region compliance team.
• Ensures timely reporting and compliance with all stipulations agreed to in the "Charter” and amendments granted to the Academy by the TEA, including but not limited to, instruction in the curriculum, including measurements of achievement of skills and objectives according to the state standards, and meeting the minimum number of days and number of minutes of instruction for each subject; attendance reporting requirements for students; confidential management of student records; building, fire, safety and health code requirements; and Special Education services to exceptional students.
• Prepares for and attends monthly and specially-convened meetings of the Board of Directors, the Parent Advisory Council, the Academic Advisory Council, and other professional meetings related to the business of the school.
• In conjunction with the local Board of Directors and Great Hearts staff, leads the local Community Investment and other annual giving programs.
• Participates with the CEO and local Board of Directors in an annual evaluation of his/her performance and accomplishments.
• Other related duties as may, from time to time, be assigned by the Superintendent or local Board of Directors.

Required/Preferred Education:

• Bachelor's degree required
• Master's degree or above in the liberal arts or a specific academic subject (e.g. history, mathematics, literature, physics, philosophy, classics) is preferred

Required/Preferred Experience:

• 2+ years of experience in School Leadership or Administration is required.

Required/Preferred Skills: Should possess relevant leadership experience, demonstrable excellence in classroom teaching, and a well-grounded moral vision of the human person. Must be immersed in the principles of classical liberal education and should have an academic background consistent with Great Hearts Academies' exclusive focus on the intellectual tradition of the Western world. Will have the vision, energy, and communication skills to be a commanding presence in the community and an eloquent spokesperson for the Great Hearts liberal arts mission.

Physical Functions: Physical functions: Requires but is not limited to standing, sitting, repetitious hand and body movements, bending, squatting, and reaching. May be required to move or position equipment up to 15 pounds approximately.

US Work Authorization is required.

Employment is contingent upon successful completion of a criminal history background check and fingerprint clearance in accordance with state requirements.

Travel required: May need to travel locally for training and professional development opportunities.
