Job Brief

We are looking for a Head of Quality Engineering to set the direction for software quality across Moneybox and ensure we can scale delivery without compromising customer outcomes, reliability or regulatory standards.

This is a senior quality engineering leadership role. You will establish quality as a shared responsibility across Engineering, Product and Design, connect quality priorities to company risks and create clear oversight from strategy through to delivery.

You will lead the definition and adoption of proportionate quality standards across Engineering, working with Product, Design and Engineering leaders to agree ownership, monitor effectiveness and escalate material gaps. The approach must be appropriate for our size and risk profile, providing enough control and evidence without introducing unnecessary process or slowing delivery.

This role requires strategic leadership, technical credibility, operational discipline and strong people leadership. You should be able to challenge engineering and testing approaches, assess automation effectiveness and turn ambiguity into clear action.

What You'll Focus on

    Set the Quality Strategy
  • Define and deliver a clear, risk-based quality strategy aligned with company, product and engineering goals.
  • Identify the most important customer, business and operational quality risks, make explicit trade-offs and focus effort where it will have the greatest impact.
  • Translate company risks into clear quality priorities, standards, controls and ownership across the software development lifecycle.
  • Define the boundaries and responsibilities between QA, Engineering, Product, Design and other relevant functions so that accountability is clear and gaps are identified early.
  • Provide senior leaders with clear, evidence-based oversight of material quality risks and the actions being taken to manage them.
  • Improve Quality and Release Confidence
  • Establish proportionate quality controls that help teams deliver quickly and safely.
  • Ensure quality risks are considered early, decisions and ownership are clear and material issues lead to learning and measurable improvement.
  • Build confidence that critical customer journeys and higher-risk changes receive an appropriate level of testing and assurance.
  • Ensure significant quality and release decisions are supported by consistent, traceable and auditable evidence.
  • Work with Engineering, Product & Design leaders to resolve quality risks, making clear recommendations and escalating where the level of risk is unacceptable.
  • Strengthen Quality Engineering and Automation
  • Set the direction for quality engineering and automation, ensuring both are focused on the most important customer and business risks.
  • Establish clear and sustainable ownership across the engineering organisation, with appropriate standards, accountability and oversight.
  • Ensure automation is designed, delivered and maintained by the teams best placed to own it, based on the needs and operating model of the organisation.
  • Embed quality throughout discovery, design, development, release and production rather than treating testing as a separate phase.
  • Ensure automation is effective, reliable and maintainable and provides meaningful confidence in the areas that matter most.
  • Use Data to Drive Improvement
  • Establish a small set of trusted quality metrics linked to material customer, business and operational risks.
  • Use data to identify weaknesses, prioritise investment and demonstrate measurable improvements in release quality, automation effectiveness, delivery predictability and engineering effectiveness.
  • Set clear expectations for each metric and ensure results below the agreed level lead to ownership and action.
  • Avoid reporting for its own sake. Metrics must support decisions, reveal risk and improve outcomes.
  • Build a High-performing QA Team
  • Set clear expectations for QA leaders and engineers and hold them accountable for outcomes.
  • Develop capability in risk-based testing, quality engineering, technical judgement and leadership.
  • Create an environment where QA is a credible, proactive partner that helps teams prevent problems and make better decisions.
  • Give QA leaders appropriate autonomy while maintaining clear standards and consistent expectations across Engineering.
  • Build a strong team culture based on ownership, constructive challenge, continuous improvement and delivery.
  • Influence Across the Organisation
  • Work closely with Engineering, Product, Design, Risk and other teams to improve quality and delivery outcomes.
  • Operate as a peer to senior leaders, helping to shape decisions rather than acting solely as an assurance or approval function.
  • Communicate risks and recommendations clearly, challenge weak assumptions and make pragmatic trade-offs.
  • Ensure quality is considered early in product, technical and operational decisions.
  • Build trust through clear evidence, sound judgement and transparent ownership of risks and actions.
  • Prepare the Function for the Future
  • Evolve the QA operating model, skills and tooling as Moneybox grows.
  • Ensure the approach remains appropriate for the size, complexity and risk profile of the business.
  • Identify how emerging technology, including AI, can improve testing efficiency, quality insights and team productivity.
  • Develop the capabilities and leadership needed to support future products, technologies and regulatory expectations.

Experience & Skills

    Essential

What We Do

At Moneybox, we help you turn your money into something greater. Millions of us want to achieve more with our money. But whether we’re looking to save for a rainy day, grow our money, buy a home, or even build a retirement fund, we leave it at the bottom of our to-do lists because we're not sure how to get started. This isn’t surprising. We aren’t taught about financial planning at school, the wealth industry was built to serve a minority, and it often feels like banks don’t care about helping us achieve outcomes. To top it off, the financial services industry is fragmented and confusing. This means that our money often isn’t working hard enough and our goals are much harder to achieve. So, we made a solution. We've brought saving, investing, home-buying, and retirement services together into one simple app. So people can reach their goals and build wealth with confidence, whatever their starting point. We want to help people build wealth, but our mission goes beyond that. We believe that building wealth isn’t simply about accumulating more money. It’s about going after the life you want and enjoying it to the fullest, today and tomorrow. This is what it means to turn your money into something greater.
