Head of Engineering – Business Origination & HELIOS

Job Summary

As Head of Engineering – Business Origination & hELIOS, you will play a critical leadership role in shaping and delivering one of SCOR’s core technology domains supporting Life & Health.

Reporting to the CTO L&H and SDS and being part of the L&H Technology Leadership Team, you will lead a large engineering organization (approximately 40 internal and external FTE), with end-to-end responsibility for delivery, technical direction, and operational excellence across the domain.

The domain covers a set of business-critical capabilities, including (but not limited to) pricing, treaty underwriting, treaty underwriting guidelines, and experience analysis, requiring strong alignment between data, analytical models, business rules, and engineering platforms.
 

This role combines engineering leadership, solution design, architecture oversight, and strategic direction. You will work closely with underwriting, pricing, and analytics stakeholders to ensure that systems, data, and decisioning flows are coherent, scalable, and aligned with SCOR’s long-term technology strategy.

Key duties and responsibilities

Engineering leadership & delivery

• Lead and develop the engineering organization for the Business Origination and hELIOS domain, covering internal teams and external partners.
• Ensure delivery of high-quality, scalable, and secure platforms supporting pricing, treaty underwriting workflows, underwriting guidelines, and experience analysis.
• Oversee technology delivery, production stability, and operational performance across the domain.
• Define and evolve team structures, operating model, and governance to support execution at scale.

Strategic technology direction

• Translate business priorities in pricing, underwriting, and experience analysis into a coherent engineering roadmap.
• Contribute to the broader L&H technology strategy as part of the CTO leadership team.
• Identify opportunities for simplification, modernization, and increased reuse across platforms and capabilities.
• Ensure alignment between short-term delivery and long-term platform evolution.

Solution design & architecture

• Provide senior leadership on solution design and key architectural decisions.
• Ensure strong alignment between data platforms, analytical models, pricing logic, and underwriting rules.
• Drive robust architectures supporting data ingestion, processing, modelling, and exposure to business processes and decision systems.
• Promote consistency of integration patterns, APIs, and platform design across the landscape.

Engineering excellence & operating model

• Establish and enforce best-in-class engineering practices, including: 
  • coding standards and quality engineering
  • test automation and release discipline
  • observability and production readiness
  • security and compliance by design
• Strengthen Agile ways of working, with focus on predictability, flow, and delivery outcomes.
• Improve transparency on delivery performance, technical debt, and system health.

AI-enabled engineering & innovation

• Drive adoption of AI to improve engineering productivity, platform capabilities, and decision support.
• Identify relevant opportunities for AI across pricing, underwriting, and experience analysis, ensuring appropriate governance and integration.
• Embed AI-enabled practices within engineering teams where they deliver measurable value.

Cross-domain collaboration & data integration

• Work closely with other Heads of Engineering (e.g., Business Management, Medical UW/C) to align engineering practices and technology choices.
• Ensure platforms evolve as part of a coherent ecosystem, avoiding fragmentation and duplication.
• Drive integration and interoperability across systems to support a closed-loop data model, linking experience analysis back into underwriting and pricing.

People leadership & stakeholder management

• Lead, coach, and develop engineering managers and senior engineers.
• Build a high-performing engineering culture focused on accountability, collaboration, and continuous improvement.
• Partner with underwriting, pricing, and analytics stakeholders to align priorities and ensure business relevance.
• Manage external vendors and partners with clear accountability for delivery and quality.

Required experience & competencies

The successful candidate will demonstrate:

• Strong leadership experience in complex engineering environments
• Ability to combine strategic thinking with deep technical judgment
• Solid understanding of data-driven and decision-support systems, ideally in pricing, underwriting, or analytical domains
• Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills
• Strong decision-making capabilities in complex and evolving environments
• A results-oriented mindset with focus on delivery, quality, and long-term sustainability

Preferred skills : 

• Significant experience in software engineering and technical leadership
• Proven experience leading large engineering teams or domains (including external partners)
• Strong understanding of modern software architecture, cloud platforms, APIs, and integration patterns
• Strong knowledge of software development best practices, Agile methodologies, and DevOps principles
• Experience with data-intensive and analytical platforms, such as: 
  • pricing or modelling systems
  • rules or decision engines
  • underwriting systems
  • experience analysis or portfolio analytics platforms
• Experience integrating data pipelines, analytical models, and business applications
• Experience driving modernization or improving engineering operating models
• Practical understanding of AI/LLM opportunities in engineering and decision systems
• Experience in insurance, reinsurance, or regulated environments is an advantage

Required Education 

Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Information Systems, or a related field
