JOB SUMMARY
The Head of Community is responsible for fostering a thriving, connected, and supportive church community. This role oversees member engagement, community programs, member support, and outreach initiatives that align with the church's mission and values, and delivers against Harvesters' five strategic objectives: Church Planting, Leadership Development, Health and Growth, Reach and Transformation, and Finance. The Head of Community works closely with church leaders, volunteers, and members to build a sense of belonging and to engage the community in the life of the church actively.
PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Team Management and Alignment
•Identify functional overlap and ensure that work is not being done in silos.
•Eliminate duplication of effort by assigning responsibilities with an umbrella view across campuses.
•Ensure goals and projects are communicated in a way that shows collaborating teams.
•Ensure team priorities are in sync and that no one is undermining the efforts of another.
•Resolve conflicts and ensure team health and harmony are always at their best.
Goal Achievement
•Understand departmental goals and create a roadmap for achieving them.
•Work with individual teams and units to understand their goals and map out execution strategies.
•Ensure goal achievement does not fall below the 70% mark week on week by driving agreed execution strategies and holding teams accountable.
•Review performance and develop strategies to resolve issues affecting performance and productivity.
•Ensure work is powered by processes and systems, and that everyone adheres to them.
•Ensure everyone works within stipulated timelines.
Church Planting — Community Framework for Expansion
•Design and document a standard community structure (small groups, membership assimilation, volunteer pipeline) that can be deployed at new campuses and church plants.
•Work with the Strategy & Planning / Church Expansion team to ensure every new campus launches with a functioning community framework in place.
•Support the transition of newly-planted congregations from launch-team community structures to steady-state community operations.
Leadership Development
•Develop and implement a volunteer recruitment, training, and retention strategy.
•Oversee and support volunteers and small group leaders across all campuses and community touchpoints.
•Provide guidance, coaching, and mentorship to Campus Heads of Community, Coordinators, and volunteers to foster growth and build a leadership pipeline.
•Build succession depth by identifying and developing the next generation of community leaders.
Community Engagement & Relationship Building (Health and Growth)
•Build and maintain strong relationships with members, newcomers, and community groups.
•Act as the primary point of contact for community feedback, concerns, and inquiries.
•Organize regular events, gatherings, and small groups to strengthen connections.
•Track member engagement and satisfaction through surveys, attendance, and other metrics, and use the data to improve community strategy.
Member Support & Pastoral Care
•Coordinate pastoral care efforts and ensure members feel supported in times of need (e.g., illness, bereavement, or crisis).
•Work closely with the pastoral team to ensure alignment in pastoral care practices.
Reach and Transformation — Outreach & Community Service
•Identify community needs and develop programs or initiatives that address them.
•Lead outreach and community service efforts that extend the church's reach into its surrounding community.
•Measure and report on the impact of outreach efforts, and on transformation outcomes such as baptisms, marriages, and births.
•Ensure programs align with the church's values, objectives, and strategic goals.
Finance — Budget & Resource Stewardship
•Prepare and manage budgets for community events, programs, and outreach activities.
•Monitor spend against budget across campuses and ensure cost-effective use of community resources.
•Ensure programs deliver measurable community outcomes relative to spend.
Data Collection & Reporting
•Prepare reports for church leadership on community engagement levels, event success, and progress against the five strategic objectives.
•Use data insights to inform and continuously improve community strategies.
Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in Social Sciences, Management, Arts, or any related field.
- Minimum of 5 to 8 years' work experience in a related environment, including people/community management.
- Additional professional qualifications and evidence of relevant training/certification will be an advantage
