About Lumafield:

Lumafield was founded in 2019 to upgrade manufacturing.

We are engineers with deep experience across the product development cycle, from initial ideas to shipping hardware, across industries and specializations, who became frustrated by the cost and complexity of modern manufacturing. So we decided to upgrade it.

Engineers make million-dollar decisions every day, and they need tools that give them the greatest possible insight into their products. By offering unprecedented visibility into products, as well as AI-driven tools that highlight problems and generate quantitative data, Lumafield promises to revolutionize the way complex products are created, manufactured, and used across industries. We started with industrial CT scanning, which for us was the most valuable but underutilized tool in the manufacturing toolbox, enabling us to rapidly inspect essential components non-destructively.

We rebuilt the whole system, from X-ray capture, to computer vision analysis, to web-based collaboration, to the entire business model, making the most advanced manufacturing tech more accessible to every industry. Our company, like our platform, is designed for upgrades. We’re building for greater intelligence, autonomy, and speed. For deeper vision, operational excellence, and powerful insights. And then we'll upgrade it all again.

Lumafield is headquartered in Cambridge, MA, and has an office in San Francisco, CA.

About the role:

Lumafield is looking for a Head of Application Engineering to lead, mentor, and scale our Application Engineering (AppE) and Forward Deployed Engineering (FDE) team. These customer-facing engineers are super users of Lumafield’s products, responsible for advising customers, developing custom technical solutions, and mastering our hardware and software ecosystem.

As the technical lead for this function, you are responsible for establishing standard, scalable ways of working, balancing the need to solve complex technical challenges with the responsibility of managing a team in a fast paced environment. You will work closely with a number of cross-functional teams, including Product Management and Customer Success, to scope, manage, and deliver solutions that transform manufacturing processes.

What you'll do:

  • Lead and Scale: Manage a team and lead recruiting, hiring, and onboarding as the team grows. Define technical focus areas and individual development plans.
  • Master the Platform: Become an internal subject matter expert in Lumafield’s hardware and Voyager software to guide the development and delivery of technical solutions.
  • Standardize Operations: Establish and continuously improve our technical ways of working. Codify best practices to ensure that technical knowledge is shared and scalable across the organization.
  • Influence the Roadmap: Work closely with Product, Customer Success, Sales, and Engineering to channel customer insights into our product roadmap, and refine our delivery strategy.
  • Drive Performance: Cultivate an environment of rigorous engineering standards and rapid problem-solving. Define and report on team-level KPIs to measure impact and delivery success.

About you:

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Engineering, Industrial Automation, or a related field.
  • Experienced Leader: 8+ years of professional experience, including at least 3 years of direct people management in a technical environment.
  • Solutions-Oriented: Proven background in solutions or application engineering within customer-facing roles.
  • Domain Expert: Deep understanding of manufacturing operations, quality control, or industrial automation.
  • Collaborative Communicator: Excellent communication and analytical skills, with a consultative approach to building internal and external relationships.

Lumafield offers both competitive cash and equity compensation, as well as a health & wellness stipend, 401k, parental leave, flexible PTO, commuter benefits, company wide events and more!
