This key specialist role will lead complex accounting matters, strengthen Group policies and disclosures, and support the development of financial reporting across our global FTSE 250 business. The role provides substantial exposure to senior finance leadership, external auditors and complex developments across a global listed group. It offers opportunities to deepen technical expertise, lead major reporting and transformation initiatives, and progress toward broader finance leadership roles.
Responsibilities
- Manage the accounting and reporting of complex and judgemental Group matters, including employee benefits, share schemes, development-cost capitalisation, patent box, research and development expenditure credits, financial instruments, uncertain tax positions, alternative performance measures, new business developments and mergers and acquisitions.
- Research accounting issues, determine appropriate treatments and prepare clear, high-quality technical papers on significant transactions, judgements, estimates and developments.
- Maintain and continuously improve the Group’s financial accounting and reporting policies, ensuring they remain practical, current and consistently applied.
- Monitor new accounting standards, regulatory developments and reporting guidance, assess their impact and lead implementation across the Group.
- Provide authoritative technical advice and constructive challenge to Group Finance, subsidiary finance teams and senior stakeholders.
- Develop and deliver accessible technical-accounting training for finance colleagues across the Group.
- Review and support the drafting of the Annual and Interim Reports, with particular focus on FRC guidance, governance reporting, climate-related reporting and the quality and consistency of disclosures.
- Engage with external auditors on significant accounting matters, supporting timely resolution and well-evidenced conclusions.
- Define the requirements and develop the business case and roadmap for the future-state Group consolidation solution, and contribute to wider reporting, control, systems and finance-transformation projects.
Key requirements
- Fully qualified accountant (ACA, ACCA or equivalent) with significant post-qualification technical-accounting experience.
- Strong and current knowledge of IFRS and UK listed-company reporting requirements.
- Proven experience analysing complex transactions and preparing clear, persuasive technical-accounting papers.
- Experience supporting the preparation or review of annual and interim financial reporting and associated disclosures.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to explain complex requirements clearly to non-specialists and influence senior stakeholders.
- Strong judgement, attention to detail and the ability to balance technical compliance with practical business considerations.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities and deliver high-quality work to challenging reporting deadlines.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office and experienced in using ERP, consolidation or financial-reporting systems.
Desirable requirements
- Experience gained in a listed, international manufacturing, engineering or technology group.
- Previous experience in a major accounting firm or a technical-accounting advisory role.
- Experience of share-based payments, research and development accounting, financial instruments, acquisitions or other complex Group transactions.
- Knowledge of UK corporate reporting, FRC guidance, and climate-related disclosures.
- Experience developing a business case or requirements for a consolidation or reporting-system transformation.
Person specification
- Intellectually curious and able to form balanced, well-supported conclusions from complex information.
- A concise and compelling writer with strong presentation and influencing skills.
- Collaborative and approachable, with the credibility to act as a trusted technical adviser.
- Proactive, organised and comfortable taking ownership of ambiguous or evolving issues.
- Committed to accuracy, integrity, continuous improvement and knowledge-sharing.
