About the Global Employment Counsel role...

The Global Employment Counsel position will be based in Barcelona, Spain and report to the Senior Legal Counsel (based in Australia), providing legal advice on all employee related matters, including employment laws, employment contracts, employee claims, works councils and union representation. Working closely with the People and Culture team and leaders across all functions, the role will support our global business - in particular our key jurisdictions of Australia, India, Mexico, the Philippines, Spain, Thailand, the United Kingdom and the United States. This is a newly created, hands-on, part-time role, working 2-3 days per week.

 

What you’ll do…

  • Provide expert counsel on a range of employment law issues, including grievances, dismissals, employment contracts and benefits.

  • Serve as a trusted advisor to the People and Culture team, local management and business leaders, guiding decision-making on employee relations, risk management and complex workplace issues. This includes advising on, and managing, SiteMinder’s obligations regarding works councils, employee representatives and union representation, including consultation, negotiation and collective bargaining processes, where such structures exist in the relevant jurisdiction.

  • Manage, alongside the People and Culture team, employment litigation and disputes, providing regulatory and compliance advice in the context of conduct, remuneration matters, and regulatory inquiries.

  • Monitor and communicate regional developments in employment laws and regulations, proactively adjusting policies and practices and providing clear, actionable advice to the business.

  • Support cross-border employment law projects, including policy harmonisation, workforce changes and compliance initiatives.

  • Advise on legal risk in a clear, practical and commercially balanced way.

 

What you’ll have…

  • Law degree with current admission to practice in at least one of the following jurisdictions: Australia, India, Mexico, the Philippines, Spain, Thailand, the United Kingdom or the United States, together with demonstrated working knowledge of employment law across all of these jurisdictions.

  • Extensive experience, or equivalent depth of experience, as a qualified employment lawyer in a top-tier law firm and/or in-house legal department of a multinational organisation.

  • Proven success in advising on complex employment law matters across multiple jurisdictions is essential (Spanish employment law experience is highly desirable given the role's base), including obligations regarding works councils, employee representative bodies and union representation where these apply, with hands-on experience of consultation and negotiation processes.

  • Fluency in English is essential, with excellent written and oral communication skills. Fluency in Spanish is highly desirable, as are additional languages spoken across SiteMinder’s operating markets.

  • The ability to think analytically and pragmatically to provide innovative, proactive advice.

  • Excellent relationship management skills, with the ability to interact effectively and collaborate with stakeholders at all levels of the business, along with external advisors.

  • Comfortable hitting the ground running in fast-paced scale-up environments.

  • You are a team player with a humble attitude and a hunger to make a meaningful impact.

  • Experience working with AI technologies to increase efficiency.

  • Comfortable working across time zones.

Skills Required

  • Law degree with current admission to practice in at least one of: Australia, India, Mexico, the Philippines, Spain, Thailand, the United Kingdom or the United States
  • Demonstrated working knowledge of employment law across multiple jurisdictions (Australia, India, Mexico, Philippines, Spain, Thailand, UK, US)
  • At least 8 years' experience as a qualified employment lawyer in a top-tier law firm and/or in-house legal department of a multinational organisation
  • Proven success advising on complex employment matters across multiple jurisdictions, including works councils, employee representative bodies and union representation, with hands-on consultation and negotiation experience
  • Fluency in English, excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Experience working with AI technologies to increase efficiency
  • Ability to think analytically and pragmatically to provide innovative, proactive advice
  • Excellent relationship management skills and ability to collaborate effectively with stakeholders at all levels and external advisors
  • Comfortable hitting the ground running in fast-paced scale-up environments and working across time zones
  • Proven experience managing employment litigation, disputes and regulatory/compliance matters
  • Spanish employment law experience
  • Fluency in Spanish
  • Experience working in high growth technology companies
  • Fluency in one or more additional European languages
