Job Description

The New York City Department of Youth and Community Development (DYCD) invests in a network of community-based organizations and programs to alleviate the effects of poverty and to provide opportunities for New Yorkers and communities to flourish. The Diversity, Equity & Inclusion unit conducts population and programmatic research and analysis, and develops tools to support agency operations. This includes the development of the Language Dashboard and the Public Engagement Tracker. Under the supervision of the Sr. GIS Analyst & Program Manager, the Geographic Information Systems (GIS) College Aide will conduct spatial analysis and develop visualizations. They will support the team with writing scripts (ex. using Python or Arcade) to automatically generate, update, and publish map products. The College Aide will:
- Locate, process, and acquire demographic, census, or other open-source data sets.
- Format data received from internal and external sources to make them usable in analytic software;
- Prepare maps, and displays using ESRI ArcGIS Pro & AGOL and/or related software and extensions;
- Work with census data, agency program data, and other sources to do spatial analysis;
- Clean, analyze and interpret complex social, economic, and population data, trends and provide
recommendations;
- Prepare charts and graphs, write reports, and present results; - Complete other special projects as
requested.

Qualifications

For Assignment Level I:
Matriculation at an accredited college or graduate school. Employment is conditioned upon continuance as a student in a college or graduate school.
For Assignment Level II (Information Technology):
Matriculation at an accredited college or graduate school. Employment is conditioned upon continuance as a student in a college or graduate school with a specific course of study in information technology, computer science, management information systems, data processing, or closely related field, including or supplemented by 9 semester credits in an acceptable course of study.
For Assignment Level III (Information Technology Fellow):
Matriculation at an accredited college or graduate school. Employment is conditioned upon continuance as a student in a college or graduate school with a specific course of study in information technology, computer science, management information systems, data processing, or other area relevant to the information technology project(s) assigned, including or supplemented by 9 semester credits in an acceptable course of study. Appointments to this Assignment Level will be made by the Technology Steering Committee through the Department of Information Technology and Telecommunications.
SPECIAL NOTE
Maximum tenure for all Assignment Levels in the title of College Aide is 6 years. No student shall be employed more than half-time in any week in which classes in which the student is enrolled are in session. Students may be employed full-time during their vacation periods.

Skills Required

  • Experience preparing maps and visual displays using ESRI ArcGIS Pro and ArcGIS Online (AGOL).
  • Ability to locate, acquire, format, and process demographic, census, and open-source datasets for analysis.
  • Ability to clean, analyze, interpret social, economic, and population data and prepare charts, reports, and presentations.
