Job DescriptionSummary
The General Sales Manager is responsible for leading the dealer sales department to achieve sales, profitability, customer satisfaction, and operational goals. This role drives performance through effective sales strategies, inventory management, and hands-on leadership while recruiting, coaching, and developing a high-performing sales team. The ideal candidate is a results-driven automotive leader who leads by example, holds the team accountable, and creates a positive, customer-focused culture.
Responsibilities:
- Drive Sales Performance: Develop and execute strategies to achieve monthly and annual vehicle sales, gross profit, and customer satisfaction objectives.
- Lead and Develop the Team: Recruit, train, coach, and motivate sales managers and sales personnel to maximize individual and department performance.
- Manage Sales Operations: Oversee daily dealership sales activities, including showroom operations, desking, deal structuring, lead management, and follow-up processes.
- Monitor Performance Metrics: Analyze sales results, gross profit, closing ratios, lead conversion, and other key performance indicators to identify opportunities and improve results.
- Optimize Inventory: Partner with dealership leadership to manage vehicle inventory, pricing, merchandising, and aging units to maximize profitability and inventory turnover.
- Deliver an Exceptional Customer Experience: Promote a customer-first approach, resolve escalated customer concerns, and drive customer satisfaction and retention.
- Ensure Operational Excellence: Maintain compliance with company policies, manufacturer standards, and applicable laws while managing department expenses and supporting overall dealership profitability.
Qualifications:
- Proven experience in automotive dealership sales leadership, preferably as a General Sales Manager, Sales Director, or Sales Manager ready to advance.
- Demonstrated success achieving vehicle sales targets, maximizing front-end and back-end gross profit, and improving departmental performance.
- Strong understanding of automotive sales processes, deal structuring, desking, inventory management, and dealership operations.
- Proven ability to recruit, coach, develop, and retain high-performing sales teams.
- Strong analytical skills with the ability to interpret sales reports, monitor KPIs, and implement performance improvement strategies.
- Excellent communication, negotiation, problem-solving, and customer relationship management skills.
- High level of integrity, accountability, professionalism, and commitment to compliance, customer satisfaction, and teamwork.
Additional Requirements:
- Valid driver’s license with an acceptable driving record.
- Must be legally authorized to work in the United States.
- Ability to successfully complete pre-employment requirements, including background check, motor vehicle record (MVR) review, and drug screening.
Compensation:
- $120,000 to $234,000
(The General Sales Manager position has a Pay Scale consisting of the following elements and ranges. Wages include base salary. The position may also pay commission compensation which is based on the value, or number of closed sales achieved at $0.00 (if no sales are made) without any upper limit other than sales performance. The position also may also pay a production bonus based on individual or team performance that may range from $0.00 (if baseline benchmarks are not met) without any fixed upper limit.)
