About Greenlight Rent

Greenlight Rent, formerly Rhino + Jetty, is making housing more affordable and accessible for millions of renters each year. We're the market-leading rental housing platform building simpler, more accessible ways for people to move into homes — and for property managers to lease with confidence.

Our technology removes friction from the move-in process, lowers upfront costs for renters, and helps property managers make faster, more accurate decisions. We support a network of 3 million rental units nationwide and work with 47 of the NMHC Top 100 property owners, including Greystar, Brookfield, Asset Living, UDR, and more.

We pioneered security deposit insurance and continue to push the industry forward with a growing suite of products — from deposit management to lease guarantees and loss-of-employment protection. We're growing quickly, tackling real problems at scale, and building technology that's changing how renting works.

The role

We’re hiring a General Counsel to lead Greenlight Rent’s legal and compliance function. This is a senior, high-impact role for an experienced M&A or corporate attorney who wants to be a true business partner, not a gatekeeper.

You’ll sit at the center of an active acquisition strategy. You’ll lead compliance across our insurance and consumer financial products, where licensing and regulatory questions shape much of what we do. You’ll also own enterprise contracting and corporate governance, lead a small team, and manage outside counsel against a budget you control.

What You’ll Do

M&A

  • Lead acquisitions end to end: diligence, structuring, purchase agreements and R&W insurance, through close.
  • Drive post-close legal and compliance integration.
  • Build a repeatable M&A playbook that makes each deal faster than the last.
  • Assess licensing and regulatory issues early so they shape deal decisions.

Regulatory & Compliance

  • Lead the company’s compliance function.
  • Oversee insurance licensing, forms and rates, carrier agreements, and regulatory exams and inquiries.
  • Build a compliance model that scales as we grow and as we bring each acquisition in.

Enterprise Contracting

  • Own MSAs with national property managers, plus carrier, channel, vendor and data protection agreements.
  • Build clear templates, approval thresholds and playbooks that let Sales move fast and with confidence.

Consumer Protection & Privacy

  • Advise on UDAP, FCRA, FDCPA, GLBA and state privacy law across our consumer financial services products.
  • Advise on the security deposit statutes that govern renter funds.
  • Partner with Product and Marketing so new products and materials are compliant from the start.
  • Maintain company policies, including our code of conduct, and lead compliance training.

Corporate, Employment & AI Governance

  • Run board processes and corporate governance across the company and its licensed subsidiaries.
  • Advise on employment matters, including policies, investigations and terminations.
  • Manage trademarks and other intellectual property, including protection of the Greenlight brand.
  • Support equity and financing matters.
  • Set the framework for how our AI systems are governed and controlled.

Team, Disputes & Outside Counsel

  • Lead a small legal and compliance team.
  • Oversee litigation, disputes and consumer complaints.
  • Select and manage outside counsel against a budget you own.

What You’ll Bring

  • J.D. and admission in at least one U.S. jurisdiction.
  • 8+ years at a leading law firm practicing M&A or corporate law. In-house experience is not required but is a plus.
  • Exposure to regulated industries, ideally through insurance or financial services clients or in-house.
  • Sound judgment on deal structure, diligence and risk allocation, with the ability to lead transactions from term sheet through integration.
  • Strong drafting and negotiation skills across complex commercial agreements.
  • A practical, business-minded partner who helps teams move quickly and do the right thing.
  • Clear, direct communication that builds trust with executives, the board and business partners.
  • Comfort building process and infrastructure in a fast-paced, high-growth environment.

Nice to Have

  • Experience with insurance licensing, carrier relationships or consumer financial services regulation.
  • Familiarity with consumer protection and privacy frameworks such as FCRA, FDCPA, GLBA and state privacy laws.
  • Exposure to the multifamily, property management or rental housing sectors.
  • Experience with AI governance or data-driven products.
  • Experience advising startup, venture-backed or PE-backed companies.

What Success Looks Like in Your First Year

  • Shorter contracting cycles through clearer templates and approval thresholds.
  • Outside counsel spend rationalized against a budget you own.
  • A compliance model that scales with each acquisition.
  • A reputation as a trusted, practical legal partner across the company.
