Squaremouth's mission is to take complicated insurance products and allow customers to easily compare them to find exactly what they need for peace of mind as they travel away from home - and our engineers are an essential part of building that experience.

Squaremouth is looking for an experienced and motivated Front End Developer with experience in WordPress, PHP, and Rails to join our team. As a key member of our development team, you will work closely with designers, backend developers, and project managers to bring beautiful and functional web applications to life. This role will involve creating custom WordPress themes, developing front-end components in Rails applications, and ensuring a seamless, responsive, and accessible user experience across platforms.

Every person spends time troubleshooting bugs, reviewing other peoples’ code, supporting customer service while on-call, and deploying updates to production. This allows all of our developers the opportunity to understand our entire system from beginning to end. The Squaremouth team promotes a collaborative environment using industry best practices, such as weekly iteration planning meetings, Continuous Integration, code reviews, and Continuous Deployment. Peer critiques and constructive criticism allow the development team to grow and learn at a fast pace.

What you will do:

  • Build, maintain, and optimize front-end components within our Rails applications
  • Collaborate with back-end developers and designers to create highly responsive, user-centric interfaces
  • Translate UI/UX designs into modern interfaces with efficient code using HTML, CSS, and JavaScript
  • Optimize front-end performance to ensure fast load times and smooth interaction
  • Ensure cross-browser compatibility, responsive design, and adherence to accessibility standards
  • Conduct code reviews and participate in software development lifecycle

Experience and skills that are important for success in this position:

  • At least 3 years of hands-on development experience in web application development
  • Proficient in HTML, CSS, JavaScript (including frameworks such as Bootstrap or React)
  • Strong experience with WordPress theme development and plugin customization
  • Good understanding of PHP, particularly in a WordPress environment
  • Basic knowledge of Rails and working with Rails views and front-end integrations
  • Familiarity with responsive design principles, cross-browser compatibility, and web accessibility standards
  • Ability to work independently, arranging your work to meet deadlines
  • Passion for growing your skills, tackling interesting work, and challenging problems
  • Energetic, positive attitude
  • Ability to work within a team, collaborate on projects, and share responsibility

It would be great if you had experience with:

  • BS in Computer Science or related field
  • Building large, performant web applications
  • Familiarity with front-end build tools such as Webpack, Gulp, or Grunt
  • Experience with version control systems, particularly Git
  • Knowledge of SEO best practices as they relate to front-end development
  • Experience with front-end testing frameworks

Benefits

  • Salary range for this position is $70,000 - $90,000, commensurate with experience
  • 401(k) match
  • Involvement in major Squaremouth decisions
  • We are currently full time remote with optional office space in the Fort Wayne area

Who we are:

Squaremouth was launched in 2003 with the core goals of becoming the best workplace for its employees and the best place for customers to buy travel insurance. In 2014, we utilized our travel insurance expertise to develop and launch Tin Leg, a travel insurance brand with policies designed to address our customer’s most common and pressing travel concerns. Tin Leg quickly became one of the most popular travel insurance providers on squaremouth.com and continues to offer some of the most comprehensive products in the travel insurance market.

We’ve grown from a small team to a company of over 50 employees, gaining national and international recognition along the way as one of the best customer service teams and best places to work. Widely recognized for our company culture, we are proud of most recently being named one of the Best Workplaces in America in 2023 by Inc. Magazine!

Continuing to strive toward our goal of being one of the most innovative companies in the field, Squaremouth was acquired in April 2023 by Specialty Program Group (SPG), a leading operator of specialty insurance brokerages and underwriting facilities. Today, Squaremouth.com, and its multi-award winning customer service team, has helped over 3 million travelers save time and money to find the best travel insurance policy for their trip.
