Job Description

INOVA Federal Credit Union is seeking a detail-oriented, analytical, and dependable Fraud Specialist to join our Fraud Department at our Corporate location.

The Fraud Specialist plays an important role in protecting INOVA Federal Credit Union and its members by identifying, investigating, documenting, and taking appropriate action on suspected fraudulent activity and account disputes.

This position is responsible for reviewing fraud and dispute packets, investigating fraudulent checks and account transactions, managing card fraud cases, monitoring fraud detection systems, and working with internal teams, law enforcement, and legal counsel when needed to assist with fraud prevention and recovery efforts.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities
  • Review, analyze, and take appropriate and timely action on fraud and dispute packets.
  • Review and investigate fraudulent checks and other fraudulent account transactions.
  • Prepare accounts for appropriate action and maintain accurate account information across INOVA FCU systems.
  • Review, submit, and monitor card-related fraud transactions through VISA cases.
  • Monitor our systems for potentially fraudulent activity.
  • Assist with creating, maintaining, and updating VISA fraud rules.
  • Create and track fraud cases through Verafin and Alkami.
  • Monitor BioCatch rules and activity and take appropriate action when suspicious activity is identified.
  • Investigate fraudulent activity and identify potential trends, patterns, and areas of risk.
  • Work and communicate with law enforcement and legal counsel as needed to assist with fraud investigations and recovery of funds.
  • Maintain accurate and thorough documentation related to fraud investigations, cases, disputes, and account actions.
  • Create, generate, and maintain weekly and/or monthly reports for management.
  • Maintain compliance with applicable state and federal laws, regulations, and credit union policies, including Regulation E and Bank Secrecy Act (BSA) requirements.
  • Maintain strict confidentiality when handling sensitive member and account information.
  • Attend monthly Loss Prevention meetings and contribute to fraud prevention and loss mitigation efforts.
  • Assist with department phone calls and emails.
  • Assist with Total Loss Claims as needed.
  • Assist with training and development of new hires and team members as needed.
  • Support departmental operations, special projects, and organizational initiatives.
  • Perform other duties as assigned to support the efficient and effective operation of the Credit Union.

The ideal candidate is someone who is analytical, organized, trustworthy, and comfortable making timely decisions in situations that require investigation and discretion.

We're looking for someone who has:

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Associate or bachelor's degree preferred; no specific major required.
  • Experience in repossessions, fraud and forgery cases, bankruptcy law, and federal and state regulations preferred.
  • Previous experience in fraud prevention, financial services, banking, investigations, loss prevention, disputes, compliance, or a related field is a plus.
  • Strong analytical and investigative skills.
  • Excellent attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Strong organizational and time-management skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines.
  • Strong decision-making and judgment skills.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication abilities.
  • Strong problem-solving and critical-thinking skills.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and appropriately handle sensitive member information.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office and related business systems.
  • Ability to work well under pressure while maintaining accuracy and professionalism.

Position Details

This is a full-time, non-exempt position located at INOVA Federal Credit Union's Corporate location.

The Fraud Specialist will work closely with the Fraud Prevention Manager and other departments and team members to identify and mitigate fraud risk, protect member accounts, investigate suspicious activity, manage fraud cases and disputes, and assist with the recovery of fraudulent funds.

The position operates in a professional office environment and requires regular use of computers, telephones, standard office equipment, and various business and fraud-monitoring systems.

Employees may be required to manage multiple investigations and priorities simultaneously while maintaining accuracy, confidentiality, and adherence to established deadlines and regulatory requirements.
