The Role
Morningstar Wealth's FP&A team is seeking an FP&A Manager to serve as the finance lead for the US Wealth business. This role sits at the center of strategic and financial decision‑making and is responsible for owning the credibility, clarity, and consistency of financial performance narratives provided to senior leadership.
This is not a reporting‑only role. The FP&A Manager is expected to independently own variance explanations, challenge assumptions, and ensure leadership receives accurate, well‑validated, and decision‑useful insights. The role reports to the Director of Financial Planning & Analysis and is based in Chicago, IL.
Key Responsibilities:
Financial Ownership & Planning
- Own the end‑to‑end financial planning, budgeting, forecasting, and reporting processes for the US Wealth business
- Lead budget, forecast, and long‑range planning in close partnership with business leaders, ensuring assumptions are well understood, clearly articulated, and appropriately challenged
- Act as the primary finance partner for US Wealth leaders, providing guidance on tradeoffs, risks, and financial implications
Performance Management, Variance Analysis & Storytelling
- Own monthly and quarterly performance reviews, producing credible, executive‑ready variance explanations that clearly identify primary drivers, separate signal from noise, and articulate implications
- Independently validate assumptions and push back on weak or unsupported explanations before outputs reach senior leadership
- Ensure consistent variance taxonomy (e.g., run‑rate vs one‑time, volume/price/mix/timing) and high analytical standards across deliverables
Business Partnership & Judgment
- Develop a deep understanding of Wealth business operations, revenue models, pricing mechanics, and cost drivers
- Translate complex financial results into clear, concise narratives that inform leadership decisions
- Serve as a trusted advisor to business leaders, balancing partnership with appropriate challenge
Process Improvement & Team Leverage
- Improve FP&A processes, templates, and controls to enhance efficiency, accuracy, and scalability
- Act as a quality gate for FP&A outputs, reducing rework and ensuring consistency across geographies
- Partner with global FP&A colleagues to raise standards of analysis and communication
Qualifications:
- 7+ years of progressive experience in FP&A, corporate finance, or related roles
- Bachelor's degree required; CPA and/or MBA a plus.
- Demonstrated experience owning financial performance narratives and presenting to senior leadership
- Strong business acumen with the ability to connect financial outcomes to operational drivers
- Proven ability to challenge assumptions constructively and protect the credibility of finance outputs
- Advanced Excel and PowerPoint skills; experience with financial planning systems (e.g., Adaptive, Workday, Oracle EPM) preferred
- Experience in asset management, wealth management, or financial services strongly preferred
