Job Description:

The Fly Console Operator serves primarily as the fly console operator for performances at the Boston Conservatory Theater at Berklee. This position will attend all technical rehearsals, dress rehearsals, and performances. Depending upon production needs this position may also need to serve the functions of deck carpenter/electrician, in the event needs arise during a performance. They will ensure the stage, workshop, and orchestra pit remain maintained, clean, and functional. Hours range from 40-60 hours per production, with overtime after 40 hours in a calendar work-week. The Boston Conservatory at Berklee features 15 automated line sets, 2 hand lines, and 1 crank line. Automated line sets are run from a JR Clancy Scene Control 500. Console training will be provided. As part of the Performance Services department, the Stage Supervisor reports to the Technical Directors and Stage
Managers.
Pay rate: $25.00 / hr

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS/PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

● Program and operate the automated rigging console

● Make repairs to scenery as needed upon advising with the Technical Direction Team

● Communicate any safety concerns with the Stage Management team in a timely manner

● Submit a technical report to the Stage Manager at the conclusion of each tech and dress rehearsal and performances.

MINIMUM JOB QUALIFICATIONS:

● BA in Theater or equivalent work experience

● 2-4 years practical theatrical experience

KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED:

● Expert knowledge of stage operations, standards, and practices

● Knowledge of standard and safe rigging practices and applications

● Knowledge of theatrical lighting systems, electric and electronic design

● Knowledge of audio-visual equipment including projections and QLab is a plus

● Experience in stage automation and show control is necessary, but not mandatory

SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:

● Troubleshooting and problem solving skills

● Punctuality, dependability, and ability to work independently

● Strong leadership and teamwork skills

● Valid driver’s license and clean driving record

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:

● Ensure safe working environment in the venue for the students and crew regarding fly console operation.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

● Indoor environments, some with low light: workshop, control booth, stages, backstage areas, office spaces

● Seated and standing positions

SPECIAL WORKING CONDITIONS, PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS, ETC:

● Nights and weekends required

● Must be able to lift 50 pounds

● Must be comfortable with heights in excess of 24 feet

● Must be able to work in tight, dark spaces
