Job Title: Florida Green Schools Intern

Department: Florida Chapter
Location: Tampa/St. Pete/Clearwater Area
Reports to:  Organizing Manager
Duration: 11-20 hours per week for 6 months; August - February

Context: At the Sierra Club, we believe in the power of interdependence. Together, we remain committed to the fight for a healthy climate built on a foundation of environmental, demographic, and gender justice – a future where all people benefit from a healthy, thriving planet and a direct connection to nature. By recognizing that our destinies are tied, we know that all things are fundamentally connected, and the overlap between ecology, race, gender, and representative government can advance our collective humanity. Sierra Club has close to 700 staff across the country and a network of 64 local chapters that are led and fueled by thousands of volunteers.  In this internship, you will be working mostly with our volunteers.

Scope: The Sierra Club Florida Chapter is made up of volunteer leaders and civic activists representing over 32,000 members. We also have over 10 staff members who help us pursue specific goals.  Our mission is to enjoy, explore, and protect the natural and threatened places in Florida, to teach others to understand and respect the fragile environment in which we live, and to support equal environmental justice for all. The intern will work with the Florida Chapter green-team-lead as well as staff and learn about stakeholder outreach and bringing younger environmentalists onto our team.

Job activities include but are not limited to:

    1. Assist the Chapter Board Member selected as the green-team-lead as well as chapter staff to build a database of Sierra Club Florida members who are interested in furthering our mission with students around the state.

    2. Coordinate with other organizations (public and private) to grow our program and increase awareness of the Sierra Club.

    3. Identify interested Sierra Club Florida Groups and document schools in that area with programs like AP Environmental Sciences whose teachers may want to work with us.

    4. Help develop a scholarship program for teachers and graduating seniors – the intern will assist in recommending to our committee where we should consider grants.

    5. Keep the Sierra Communications Team and Chapter Development Director aware of our activities and successes.

    6. Travel when needed to Sierra Club Groups (and affiliated organizations) around the state to make them aware of our activities and recruit new members to help with our efforts.

    7. Conduct research on how Florida school districts are pursuing goals like ours.  We will learn from others’ best practices and teach ours.

    8. Assist in the planning and execution of educational campaigns and fundraising events.

    9. Draft and/or edit volunteer correspondence, including thank you letters, newsletter articles, social media outreach, and campaign updates.

    10. Other tasks as assigned.

The successful candidate must have the following skills and experience:

    • Demonstrates good verbal and written communication skills.

    • Experience or a strong interest in writing, environmental justice, working with students and grassroots environmental action.

    • Proficiency in Google Suite or Microsoft Word and video conferencing. Experience with Salesforce is a plus.

    • Good time-management skills.

    • Committed to self-growth. You are committed to continuously deepening and evolving your own understanding through study, openness, and humility, and you easily recognize your own relationship with privilege and power.

    • You see mistakes as opportunities for growth; problems as catalysts for solutions and inspire others along the journey. This is a new position – you will be growing with us.  You carry a constructive approach, can-do attitude, a sense of humor, and authentic kindness.

    • Intern must be at least 18 years of age and possess a valid driver’s license. This is a hybrid work position, including some virtual (work-from-home) and some in-person meetings and campaign activities. Some evening and/or weekend hours should be expected.
