Job Summary:

Firefighter EMT’s Perform fire suppression duties and medical pre-hospital procedures.  Firefighter EMT’s respond to emergency and non-emergency incidents which include providing medical, fire suppression and rescue services. 

Pay range is $56,947 - $59,786. The Schedule for this position will be 48/96, ten 24 hour shifts per month.

 

 

 

Essential Functions:

 

Fire Suppression

  • Performs fire suppression duties by responding to emergency fire alarms. 
  • Assists in the suppression of structural, residential, commercial, industrial, chemical, petroleum, vehicle, aircraft and Wildland fires; applying the appropriate extinguishing agents to the source of the fire. 
  • Operates various pieces of fire equipment and gear for fire suppression and control; drives and operates fire apparatus; search and rescue; ventilation and salvage operations.  
  • Provides written reports detailing specific firefighting and rescue actions taken on scene.

 

Emergency Medical Services

  • Responds to emergency medical calls by evaluating situations, providing emergency and non-emergency medical procedures both on scene and in a moving vehicle, and transferring patients to medical facilities.
  • Treat patients in accordance with established Emergency Medical Service Protocols and Rural/Metro Fire Department policy. 
  • Provide written reports detailing patient care. 

 

Maintenance

  • Conduct daily and weekly vehicle and equipment inspections as assigned. 
  • Ensure all vehicle and equipment discrepancies are documented and reported to the on-duty Fire Captain.
  • Perform daily maintenance of facilities by cleaning, inspecting, and any other facility maintenance deemed necessary. 

 

Training

  • Participate in all required training sessions, including, but not limited to; live fire drills, performance evaluation drills, ongoing skills maintenance, practice and training, annual OSHA drills, EMS major skills and any other mandatory Company training.

 

Customer Service

  • Conduct fire safety, home safety, fire extinguisher and pre-fire planning inspections. 
  • Provide information to the public, install smoke detectors, conduct station tours, visit schools, and participate in public education standbys. 
  • Work involves serving the public. 
  • Work requires cooperative/supportive interaction with co-workers, supervisors, doctors and other healthcare workers. 
  • Work requires interaction with representatives of other City departments, other fire departments and local, state and federal agencies. 

 

Communications

  • Portable radios are used as a means of communication. 
  • Must conduct all radio communications in a professional, respectful manner. 

 

Compliance:

  • Reviews paperwork for accuracy and correct process.
  • Must participate in scheduled and unscheduled onsite compliance audits.
  • Implements corrective/preventive measures as determined by the Corporate Compliance/Audit Committee.
  • Cooperates with Internal Audit, Compliance and HR on any recommendations and changes to compliance and legal workflow issues.
  • Takes swift and immediate action in accordance with Internal Audit and Corporate Compliance on any areas of concern.
  • Complies and enforces all policies and procedures.
  • Has successfully completed all required Compliance Training within the required time period.
  • Has had no compliance related corrective action during the current review period.

 

Additional Duties:

  • Perform other duties as directed. 
  • Other duties may be assigned that are specific to the local operation. 

 

Qualifications:

  • State, International Fire Service Accreditation Congress (IFSAC) or Fire Service Professional Qualifications System (ProBoard) Firefighter II and Hazardous Materials-Operations level certification.  
  • If assigned to an airport operation – State, IFSAC, ProBoard or FAA Airport Firefighter certification. State or National Registered EMT-B
  • Current CPR/AED certification.
  • Valid driver license with good driving record.  DUI within last 5 years is disqualifying.
  • Able to work 24 hr shifts.
  • Able to work any shift assigned, including nights, holidays and weekends.
  • Available to work overtime as assigned and as needed on an emergency basis.

 

Education Requirements:

  • High School diploma or GED required.

Physical Requirements:  

  • The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.
  • While performing the duties of this job, fire department personnel are frequently required to walk, sit, climb, crawl, kneel, bend, stoop, lift, talk, see, hear, feel, use clear speech and operate machinery.   There is a need to reach and perform moderate (20-50 pounds) and frequent heavy (50-200 pounds) lifting during the use of tools and equipment, and while assisting others while extinguishing fires or treating ill/injured persons.
  • Firefighting may require an annual pack test.  The Pack test refers to work capacity tests used to qualify individuals for Wildland firefighting duty.  The pack test measures aerobic capacity, muscular strength and muscular endurance.  The pack test requires completion at the arduous endurance level:  a 3-mile hike with a 45-pound pack to be completed within 45 minutes. 

 

Cognitive/Psychosocial/Mental Requirements:

  • Occasionally: Analyzing, judgment.
  • Frequently: Problem solving, decision making, reasoning.
  • Constantly: Work requires the ability to read and write reports, follow orders and instructions and read fire manuals. General math calculations such as addition, subtraction, multiplication and division.

 

Stress Factors:

  • Frequently: Repetitive tasks, high pressure.
  • Occasionally: Fatigue, intense tasks

Turn out gear, self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA), gloves, helmet, safety glasses, safety shoes, hazmat suit.  Ground ladders, portapower units, bolt cutters, water cut off tools, sledge hammers, lug wrenches, hand truck, battering ram, water rescue boat, life throw rings, stethoscopes, glucometer, backboards, neck collars, automatic defibrillators, aerial ladders, knives, chain saws, hand saws, pinch bars, fire extinguishers, portable lights, life vests, jet skis, sphygmomanometer, pulse oxsimetry, CIDs, electrocardiogram, angiocatheters, fire hoses, nozzles, axes, ceiling hooks, pry bars, power saws, ladders, heavy fans, shovels, ropes, hydraulic extrication equipment, fire engine, radios, generators, standard Microsoft Windows and Office software, printers, Fire incident reporting system, firehouse software.

  • Work is performed primarily in an indoor office environment; Firefighting, Medical Services and Rescue duties may be performed in or outdoors in potentially adverse conditions, such as, but not limited to: extreme heat, cold, wet, humid, and loud situations.
