Job Summary
The role of the Finance Coordinator reports to the Finance Manager and will provide a variety of professional and accounting services, and analyzes, supports, and implements improvements to meet the periodic reporting and other requirements of the VPFO Finance. The Finance Coordinator will provide back-up and support for the maintenance of accounting functions in accordance with UBC s policies and procedures. With direction from the Finance Manager or designate, the role is responsible for accurate and timely reporting and financial analysis.
Organizational Status
This position reports to the Finance Manager. The Finance Coordinator must ensure accurate and detailed analysis to support better decision making. Works closely with other unit finance support staff to ensure UBC policies and procedures are adhered to and operational results are accurately reflected in the financial systems.
Work Performed
In keeping with UBC financial procedures and standards, responsible for supporting/maintaining accounting functions, and to meet month-end, quarter-end, year-end reporting and other requirements, including the financial and regulatory reporting  to both internal and external users.
Responsible for preparation of and finalizing year-end working papers for the external auditors relating to financial accounts as required, consult with the Finance Manager or designate when required.
Participates in business process analysis, documenting process flows and facilitating workshops to elicit improvement, and in training in new systems and structures.
Designs and implements new or modified financial management or workflow systems as needed to meet operational requirements.
Develops and implements appropriate internal control and budgetary systems. Interprets and monitors financial policies and procedures established by UBC.
Provides advice, direction and guidance concerning budget, accounting and financial matters, accounting policy interpretation and sound business practices; advising on financial implications of various planning options for units and bringing issues that are non-conforming to the attention of the Finance Manager.
Collects, analyzes, interprets, summarizes, and maintains complex data sets for the generation of financial and analytical reporting using advanced reporting tools. Generates periodic reports by entering or updating transactional and financial information and printing out the appropriate reports on a regular basis as needed.
Provides backup to support existence of capital assets.
Prepare comprehensive financial reports for review with other members and contribute to the development of monitoring standards for various accounts to accurately analyze, isolate risk factors
Oversees account reconciliations process and responsible for ensuring the accuracy and timeliness of completion
Participates on high priority projects, as identified by the Finance Manager or designate.
Other Related Duties:
Performs analysis pertaining to accounts.
Oversees all expenditures including determining eligible expenses, transferring of funds as necessary, producing variance reports and advising and resolving impending problems/inconsistencies.
Participates in the design and implementation of new or modified financial management systems as needed to meet operational requirements and to streamline financial and administrative practices for effectiveness and efficiency.
Consequence of Error/Judgement
Work is expected to be at a high level of accuracy. Errors and poor decisions by this position could result in unreliable information or no information being available to effectively manage the finances of a large and very complex organization.
The work performed by this position in conjunction with the Finance Manager must be accurate, and the position must be able to identify errors and exceptions for follow-up and resolutions.
Supervision Received
This position reports to the Finance Manager.
Supervision Given
This role is expected to provide direction to Clerks and co-op students.
Minimum Qualifications
Undergraduate degree in a relevant discipline. Completion of at least 7 of the 14 CPA academic prerequisites. Minimum of two years of related experience, or the equivalent combination of education and experience.

Preferred Qualifications

University degree in business administration, economics, commerce, accounting preferred. Experience with reconciliations and analysis of financial data. Computer experience required (Excel, Word,). Familiarity with computerized financial systems and applications. Familiarity with UBC financial and accounting systems is an asset. Basic knowledge and skills in accounting, finance, management and customer relations. Excellent communication skills required including written, oral, and presentation. Ability to prioritize and work effectively under pressure to meet deadlines. Ability to analyze problems, identify key information and issues, and effectively resolve. Ability to analyze and interpret data. Assertiveness, diplomacy, sensitivity, and the ability to promote desired behavior and secure cooperation and acceptance of decisions.
