Job Summary:
This position is responsible for overseeing the Markel Ventures (MV) team within Markel's finance group. This position is responsible for the consolidation of Markel Ventures financial statements ensuring the corporate control environment is functioning properly. This position is responsible for partnering with leadership to provide strategic support for meeting the divisions' objectives and priorities. This position works with limited oversight from management.

Job Description

  • Oversee the preparation of MV's consolidated financial statements including income statement, balance sheet, cash flows, and supporting schedules used by the CAR and SEC reporting teams



  • Work with leadership to ensure priorities and objectives are understood by the team
  • Provide leadership, oversight and accountability over accounting responsibilities, whether strategic or tactical
  • Partner with MV Tax Director on provision support
  • Oversee the preparation of MV presentations to senior Markel leadership, BOD, and audit committee
  • Participate in quarterly closing calls communicating significant drivers impacting relevant account balances during the period
  • Work closely with other functional areas (i.e., financial reporting, corporate accounting, tax, investments, human resources, disbursements, treasury) and business management to resolve issues and support achievement of business goals
  • Champion process improvement and ensure teams are continually working to improve processes
  • Participate in the internal and external audit processes
  • Partner with others to drive resolution of GAAP technical accounting issues and implementation of new standards
  • Lead integration of new affiliate financial close and reporting, cash flow modeling and purchase accounting. Assist with acquisition due diligence as requested.
  • Lead, recruit, supervise, develop, mentor and provide performance feedback to direct reports for the purpose of achieving functional goals and objectives
  • Identify performance metrics and creating reporting to identify areas for improvement
  • Ensure annual budget and forecast processes are efficient, timely and accurate
  • Represent team in strategic accounting and business projects as they arise



Education

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting required


Certification

  • CPA designation required


Work Experience/Skill Set

  • Minimum of 10-15 years combination of public accounting and industry experience in the financial close, consolidation and/or financial reporting.
  • Previous experience as an auditor in public accounting, ideally with a "Big 4" firm preferred
  • Prior experience in a publicly traded company preferred
  • Current knowledge of US GAAP and requirements for the Sarbanes-Oxley Act
  • Exposure to public company financial reporting (Forms 10-K, 10-Q, etc.) including disclosure requirements
  • Hyperion Financial Management, Smartview and Oracle Could suite of financial products experience preferred
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to interact successfully with not only direct reports, but also with cross-functional relationships and non-financial business leaders to understand business needs, communicate goals and influence behavior
  • Proficiency with Excel and Power Point required
  • Strong people management skills with experience in leading and mentoring direct reports to achieve goals while ensuring professional development and performance.
  • Experience leading teams including influencing indirect reports and cross-functional members to achieve team goals
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong analytical and problem solving skills.
  • Proven ability to connect data analysis with business issues and decisions.
  • Strong organization and time management skills.
  • Strong desire for continuous improvement.
