The Fabricator should be knowledgeable in the operations of machines required by this job classification and be able to maintain them in good working condition (TPM). Must possess the ability to understand all gauging and checking fixtures used in checking the parts being produced by the machines involved in the classification. Must be able to check the finished part to the blueprint and to the frequency rate of the work instruction. The employee must understand the processes and functions of the equipment to determine when changes need to be made in the routine tasks due to abnormal conditions. These abnormal conditions may be equipment or piece related. Able to use initiative in solving major problems within everyday activities. Must have a good understanding of their own abilities and knowledge to determine when to seek help making decisions. Incumbent needs to recognize discrepancies and bring them to the attention of the appropriate personnel.  Able to use one’s own initiative in solving minor problems in everyday activities.

Physical Effort

The Fabricator stands and moves about his or her station and in some cases throughout the shop environment. Bending, pivoting, reaching overhead and reaching outward are frequent physical movements that need to take place. The employee needs to be able to handle parts, tools, material and equipment which requires gripping, grasping, and bending of the wrist. Depending on the area where the fabricator is working this is done on a frequent to constant basis. The operator lifts, carries, pushes and pulls parts weighing an average of 29 lb. Although some items weigh more, a maximum lift of 50 lb. is all that is required. There are industrial lifts in place for the fabricators to use and Valmont encourages using the buddy system, when possible, for lifting heavier items. The fabricator needs to maintain the stamina and energy to work long hours during the busy fabrication seasons and at a pace that enables the cell or department to attain set goals.

Working Conditions

The incumbent may work around material which is stacked overhead height. Most operations in a manufacturing environment expose employee to some type of disagreeable working conditions (wind, cold, heat, dust, dirt, fumes, noise, vibration, water, or oil). There are fumes from lift trucks, side loaders and straddle trucks. Working conditions may vary with specific work assignments and departments. Inside shop work is the most common. Indoor work may be in a noisy environment with sound levels above 80 decibels. Safety glasses and metatarsal safety shoes are required in the production area of the plant. The employee may be operating equipment that uses liquid coolant and may also be exposed to cast iron dust. The employee must be able to spend the entire work shift within this production environment.
