Job Description

Experimental Noise and Vibration Engineer (EHM)

Derby – Hybrid/Onsite
Full time

Position Summary

An exciting opportunity has arisen for an Experimental Noise and Vibration Engineer (EHM) working within Development and Experimental. In this role, your main focus will be on supporting the Engine Health Monitoring (EHM) section of the team, which will involve the review and analysis of whole engine vibration data to support Rolls-Royce Production Build and EOS with engine Pass-off. You will also be involved in the analysis and review of in-service engine vibration data to help support any on-wing exceedances or events and to help optimise the workscope of engines being removed for shop visits and maintenance work. Because of the bespoke nature of the work that the team carry out, you will be working closely with the software design team to develop and validate tools and software.

The Experimental Noise and Vibration team sits within the Measurement and Test Engineering organisation within Test and Experimental Engineering. As a whole, the team has a broad scope covering the acquisition and analysis of engine noise data to support airframe certification, the specification and management of lab-based component testing, the analysis of dynamic data from Engine Development Programmes and the authoring of substantiation reports to support engine certification, the impact testing of components and structures, as well as the support of new production build and EOS engines through Pass-off testing and the on-wing operation of engines. This provides the successful candidate with the opportunity to broaden their skillset beyond EHM capability.

In addition, the role provides the opportunity to implement advanced AI-driven tools and analytical methods to further enhance the efficiency and accuracy of vibration analysis workflows. By integrating machine learning techniques into existing processes, the successful candidate will help streamline data handling, accelerate diagnostic insight generation and contribute to the development of next-generation automated capabilities within the EHM team.

As a team, Experimental Noise and Vibration will produce in the region of 20 Level 2 substantiation reports to support certification during a typical EDP, and each year the EHM section is responsible for tens of millions of dollars of cost avoidance.

What you will be doing:

  • Review and analyse on-wing and Pass-off vibration data to optimise workscope recommendations.

  • Analyse whole engine vibration Pass-off data to support release into service or define RTS re-work recommendations.

  • Provide technical support to the Service Support front desk with on-wing vibration-related queries.

  • Support on-wing failure investigations through the analysis and interpretation of vibration data.

  • Work collaboratively with engineering and software teams to support the development, validation and implementation of tools and software used within EHM.

  • Process, analyse and interpret engine vibration data to identify trends, anomalies and potential areas requiring further investigation.

  • Communicate analysis, technical findings and recommendations clearly to relevant engineering and business stakeholders.

  • Contribute to the team’s continuous improvement journey through the development of new capability, analytical methods and improved ways of working.

  • Support the development and implementation of advanced analytical, automation and AI-driven capabilities to improve the efficiency and accuracy of vibration analysis workflows.

  • Collaborate across the wider Experimental Noise and Vibration team, supporting broader Development and Experimental activities and developing capability beyond the EHM domain.

Position Qualifications:

  • Educated to degree level in Engineering, or equivalent qualification or relevant engineering experience.

  • Experience of analysing and interpreting engineering or technical data to support informed decision-making and problem resolution.

  • Good analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to work with complex technical information and identify meaningful trends or findings.

  • Strong communication skills, with the ability to communicate technical information clearly and work effectively within a multidisciplinary environment.

  • Ability to work collaboratively with engineering, software and other technical teams to deliver effective outcomes.

  • Customer-oriented mindset, with the ability to understand requirements and provide timely, effective technical support.

Preferred Requirements:

  • Previous experience within the EHM or Pass-off domain.

  • Previous experience of processing, analysing and visualising large volumes of data.

  • Previous engine health monitoring experience.

  • A basic understanding of the engine build process.

  • Experience using MATLAB.

  • Experience using SQL.
