About the Role:
The Executive Editor is a senior scientific and editorial leader within the in-house team of Advanced Science, Wiley’s flagship premium Open Access journal. Bringing deep subject matter expertise, authoritative editorial judgment, and strong community standing, the Executive Editor plays a central role in shaping the scientific direction, content quality, and strategic growth of the journal.
This is a role for an experienced researcher-turned-editor who can engage credibly with the scientific community, make high-stakes editorial decisions, and serve as a trusted partner to the Editor-in-Chief in positioning Advanced Science at the forefront of multidisciplinary science.
How you will make an impactScientific and Editorial Leadership- Exercise senior editorial judgment on manuscript decisions, scope, and content strategy across the journal’s broad multidisciplinary portfolio spanning materials science, physics, and adjacent fields.
- Work closely with the Editor-in-Chief to define and evolve the scientific vision of Advanced Science, ensuring the journal attracts and publishes the highest-impact research.
- Lead acquisition strategy across subject areas, identifying emerging research trends and engaging with key scientific communities to strengthen the journal’s content pipeline.
- Guide and mentor Deputy Editors in their editorial decision-making, acquisition activity, and editorial board development, maintaining consistency and quality across the team.
- Serve as a credible scientific ambassador for Advanced Science at international conferences, institutional visits, and community events, representing the journal with authority and visibility.
- Take ownership of editorial board renewal and expansion, drawing on deep community knowledge to identify and recruit leading researchers who strengthen the journal’s reach and reputation.
- Support the Editor-in-Chief in handling complex editorial, ethical, and peer review matters, applying sound judgment and upholding the highest standards of research integrity.
- Partner with the Editor-in-Chief and senior editorial leadership to ensure Advanced Science’s growth strategy is aligned with the RPX 2.0 Advanced brand expansion initiative, contributing scientific insight to investment and launch decisions.
- Coordinate editorial initiatives across subject areas to sustain high-impact growth and maintain a balanced, strategically coherent content portfolio.
- Support the establishment of transfer networks and workflows to facilitate content flow to new Advanced journal launches, leveraging scientific knowledge of the portfolio to make sound transfer decisions.
- Act as a senior point of contact for cross-functional partners in Production, Ethics, Marketing, and Publishing Development, providing editorial context and judgment to support efficient workflows.
- Organise and lead meetings with editors and stakeholders to maintain strategic alignment and clear communication across the journal’s operations.
- PhD or equivalent research experience in a relevant subject area (materials science, physics, chemistry, biology or adjacent multidisciplinary fields strongly preferred).
- Significant experience in scholarly publishing with substantial in-house editorial responsibility, including experience operating at or equivalent to Editor-in-Chief level.
- Demonstrable scientific credibility and active engagement with the research community.
- Strong understanding of the Open Access publishing landscape, including Transformative Agreements.
- Excellent scientific and professional communication skills in English.
- Willingness to travel to represent Advanced Science at national and international scientific events.
- Postdoctoral research experience.
- Experience launching Gold OA journals or leading the transition of hybrid journals to Open Access.
- Existing network within the materials science and/or physics research community.

It is anticipated that most qualified candidates will fall within the range, however the ultimate salary offered for this role may be higher or lower and will be set based on a variety of non-discriminatory factors, including but not limited to, geographic location, skills, and competencies.
