General Overview:

The Executive Director, Institutional Giving leads Sylvester institutional fundraising activities to strengthen relationships with key national constituencies to advance philanthropic support for a variety of institutional programs and priorities. Additionally, the Executive Director, Institutional Giving works to identify funding opportunities and develops strategies for successful approaches. The Executive Director is a key member of the Sylvester leadership team.
Reporting to the Assistant Vice President, Sylvester Development, this position works closely with colleagues and leaders in the hospital, clinical departments and research to proactively craft and implement strategies to increase philanthropic support from institutional donors. The successful candidate will be skilled at working with senior leadership and external partners on groundbreaking gifts and grants that achieve UHealth/MSOM priorities and advance health care innovation. The position will also work closely with foundation relations to craft the proposals once that stage of the relationship is reached.

The Executive Director is responsible for staying current with new trends in philanthropy and apprising leadership and other colleagues to maximize success. The Executive Director advises Sylvester Development Leadership on complex compliance issues in institutional gift designation and administration working in partnership with other key units within the department and across UHealth/MSOM. The Executive Director will participate in strategic planning with the Vice President, Medical Development and AVP, Sylvester Development and lead and execute projects and programs in support of the leadership team, working collaboratively to identify and address Sylvester-wide opportunities and challenges.

Essential Responsibilities:

  • Oversee and lead the Sylvester Development programs in Institutional Giving to set direction.

  • Develop and implement strategies to identify and engage funding entities to grow and diversify philanthropic support for Sylvester's missions and priorities.

  • Lead fundraising efforts to secure major and principal gifts from institutional donors, build and maintain a portfolio, contributing significantly to the University's overall fundraising goals.

  • Build and maintain strong, productive relationships that lead to meaningful collaborations and sustained support by initiating and conducting site visits for top institutional leaders.

  • Collaborating closely with the Director of Sylvester, faculty, researchers, to build a culture of institutional fundraising that enables strong relationships between Sylvester and its institutional funders.

  • Stay abreast of industry trends, best practices, and emerging opportunities within institutional philanthropy and research.

  • Partners with the University of Miami Foundation Relations team to produce grant applications and the University of Miami proposal writing team for persuasive proposals.

  • Represent the institutional relations field within the broader development and academic communities, including NACCDO.

  • Share relevant information on strategy and the roles of institutional funders in the overall fundraising landscape.

  • Build strategic collaboration tools and processes necessary to optimize institutional fundraising for Sylvester internally and externally.

  • Grow the institutional relations pipeline and program and personally manage a portfolio of prospects and donors.

  • Work collaboratively with colleagues to identify and address challenges and opportunities across the department, providing thought leadership beyond immediate area of responsibility, as appropriate.

  • Participate in strategic planning with the AVP, Sylvester Development to lead and execute projects and programs in support of the leadership team and overall department goals.

  • Lead and support collaborative partnerships among teams and programs to execute coordinated fundraising activities and strategies, especially when related to institutions.

  • Develop stewardship plans to engage and grow relationships with existing Sylvester institutional donors, in collaboration with foundation relations.

  • Prepare and work within approved programmatic annual budget.

  • Contribute to maintaining positive office morale.

  • Take on other office-wide duties at the request of Sylvester leadership.

Qualifications:

Bachelor’s degree and 7 - 10 years of demonstrated successful experience in institutional giving, preferably in healthcare or cancer. Equivalent combination of education and experience will be considered. Outstanding oral and written communication skills are necessary along with the ability to be highly organized, creative, energetic, and assertive and exhibit the independent judgment and personal integrity necessary to carry out a senior management role in fundraising. A teamwork oriented approach to colleagues and proven ability to manage people in a positive and constructive environment are essential.
