Executive Director, Epic Applications

Position Summary

The Executive Director of Epic Applications provides enterprise-wide strategic and technical leadership for the organization's Epic electronic health record (EHR) platform, holding executive accountability for Epic strategy, investment, and delivery across the enterprise. This role leads a multi-tiered organization of Directors, senior managers, and analysts responsible for the design, build, and delivery of Epic solutions, and serves as the primary executive partner to the CHIO and business-unit leadership in aligning the Epic roadmap with organizational strategy. The Executive Director brings vast, hands-on EHR expertise (15+ years) spanning Acute Care, Primary Care, Pharmacy Services, Behavioral Health, and Accountable Care Organization (ACO) operations, and is accountable for the Epic platform's long-term vision, enterprise governance, vendor relationship, and financial portfolio, while driving innovation and continuous improvement across the full Epic ecosystem.

Key Responsibilities

Executive Leadership & Organizational Management

  • Lead, mentor, and develop a multi-tiered organization of Directors, senior managers, and Epic analysts across all application areas, building leadership bench strength and long-term succession plans.

  • Set the organizational structure, staffing strategy, and capability roadmap for the enterprise Epic function, including build-vs-buy and internal-vs-partner staffing decisions.

  • Own performance management, career development, and organizational culture for the Epic organization, fostering accountability, collaboration, and continuous learning at every level.

  • Serve as a member of the senior IT/clinical informatics leadership team, contributing to enterprise technology strategy beyond the Epic platform.

Enterprise Build & Delivery 

  • Own enterprise-wide accountability for Epic build activities, architecture standards, and technical governance, ensuring designs meet clinical, operational, regulatory, and enterprise-architecture requirements.

  • Direct, design and own delivery for large-scale, highly visible cross functional and interdependent Enterprise projects

  • Establish, own, and evolve strategic tech alignment, build standards, testing protocols, and change control processes across the full Epic portfolio.

  • Oversee system upgrades, module implementations, and integration efforts.

Executive Stakeholder & Business Partnership

  • Serve as the senior executive point of contact and trusted advisor for all Epic IT initiatives across the enterprise, including C-suite and board-level engagement.

  • Forge and maintain strategic relationships with physician executives, operational leadership, and business partners across Acute Care, Primary Care, Pharmacy, Behavioral Health, and ACO/population health teams.

  • Translate enterprise business and clinical needs into actionable technology strategy and prioritized roadmaps.

  • Present portfolio status, risk, and outcomes to executive leadership, governance committees, and the board as needed.

Issue & Enterprise Risk Management

  • Act as the escalation point for critical issues, system outages, and cross-team conflicts related to Epic.

  • Drive enterprise root cause analysis practices and ensure timely, sustainable resolution of high-impact, high-visibility problems.

  • Own proactive enterprise risk identification across interdependent programs and direct mitigation strategy at the portfolio level.

Innovation & Enterprise Strategy

  • Set the enterprise strategy for streamlining workflows, reducing technical debt, and modernizing the Epic technology stack.

  • Maintain current point of view on Epic roadmap releases, industry trends, and emerging tools (e.g., automation, interoperability, AI-enabled workflows), and assess applicability to the organization..

  • Champion enterprise-wide standardization, best practices, and platform maturity across all Epic applications and business lines.

Qualifications

Required

  • 15+ years of progressive EHR/Epic experience, including significant time in Epic build, design, and senior/executive leadership roles.

  • Demonstrated experience leading multi-tiered organizations, including Directors and senior managers, in a large, matrixed healthcare IT environment.

  • Vast, hands-on knowledge of Epic applications across Acute Care, Ambulatory/Primary Care, Pharmacy (Willow), and Behavioral Health (Beacon or equivalent) from a technology/build perspective.

  • Experience supporting ACO, value-based care, or population health technology initiatives at an enterprise scale.

  • Proven track record owning large, cross-functional, highly visible programs with multiple interdependencies and enterprise-level risk.

  • Strong executive presence with a demonstrated track record presenting to and influencing C-suite, board, and physician executive stakeholders.

  • Excellent problem-solving skills and experience serving as the ultimate escalation point for critical, high-pressure, enterprise-level issues.

  • Epic certifications in one or more relevant modules

  • Experience leading Epic upgrades, optimization initiatives, or major go-lives as an executive sponsor or accountable senior leader.

  • Familiarity with interoperability standards, population health tools, and healthcare regulatory requirements (HIPAA, MU/Promoting Interoperability, etc.).

Preferred

  • Experience representing an organization at Epic's Global User Conference (UGM/XGM) or comparable industry forums.

Reporting Relationship

Reports to Chief Health Informatics Offices and manages Directors, senior managers, and Epic analysts across the enterprise Epic organization.

Pay Range

The typical pay range for this role is:

$175,100.00 - $334,750.00


This pay range represents the base hourly rate or base annual full-time salary for all positions in the job grade within which this position falls.  The actual base salary offer will depend on a variety of factors including experience, education, geography and other relevant factors.  This position is eligible for a CVS Health bonus, commission or short-term incentive program in addition to the base pay range listed above.  This position also includes an award target in the company’s equity award program.
