Under occasional oversight, manage underwriting activities within RLI’s Southeast Excess Liability team. Manage and grow a profitable book of business with a focus on non-admitted accounts within the construction industry. Underwrite complex risks and provide leadership in evaluating various excess exposures. Develop and maintain strong relationships with wholesale brokers and reinsurance partners while ensuring disciplined risk selection and portfolio profitability.Principal Duties & Responsibilities
- Analyze, evaluate, accept, decline, rate, quote, and bind new or renewal submissions with high premium or risk exposure for complex excess placements.
- Assess primary policy terms, underlying carrier strength, and loss histories to make informed underwriting decisions.
- Build strong relationships between agents, reinsurers, and contacts.
- Review complex submissions, account losses, pricing models, and profitable premiums.
- Collaborate with claims, actuarial, and product management teams to refine strategy, appetite, and pricing.
- Assist with special projects or other duties as needed.
- Typically requires a bachelor's degree in insurance, finance, risk management, business or a related field
- Minimum of 7 years of related casualty underwriting experience for consideration

- Ability to use analytical methods in underwriting processes to find workable solutions.
- Ability to verbally and in writing, communicate findings and recommendations to internal and external contacts on underwriting matters.
- Ability to use software to summarize and analyze large amounts of data.
- Understands, applies, & properly documents nature of operations of the risk for accounts assigned & communicates findings.
- Ability to prepare, review, and complete underwriting analysis of accounts.
- Analytical skills and understanding of submission requirements, model entry, and product appetite.
- Proven ability to build and maintain productive broker relationships.
- Participates in underwriting related continuing education.
- Strategic perspective with the ability to balance growth objectives and underwriting discipline.
