About the Role

THE POSITION

Our global investment platform comprises more than 500 investment professionals across seven investment functions—Hedge Fund Group, Private Investments, Sustainability, Equity & Fixed Income Boutiques, Research, Science & Strategy, and Trading—spanning the Americas, EMEA, and APAC. Together, the platform manages over $1 trillion in assets across the capital structure.  

 

 The team’s strategies are typically unconstrainted, non-benchmark-oriented investment approach which seek to outperform the broad Japanese market over time with a focus on downside mitigation The role will focus on conducting in-depth fundamental research, generating investment ideas, and assuming primary coverage responsibility for designated sectors. 

 

The role reports to the Director of Equity Boutiques and will be based in our Tokyo office. 

 

 

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

This individual will be responsible for, but not limited to: 

 

  • Generate ideas in the Japan equity space, based on fundamental screening and research based on discussions with other investment professionals within the firm as well as his/her own investment recommendations. 

  • Own and maintain coverage of designated sectors  

  • Identify and quantify stocks of companies that are being considered for investment 

  • Make financial forecasts of company revenues, earnings, and profitability 

  • Conducting analysis of financial results and meeting company management to synthesize and share his/her own view  

  • Monitoring company announcements 

  • Data management and analysis using spreadsheets and databases 

  • Maintaining and distributing notes on investment meetings 

  • Building and maintaining company financial models 

  • Support investment stewardship and engagement initiatives 

 

ESSENTIAL SKILLS/ QUALIFICATION

We are seeking an individual with excellent analytical and communication skills, and an eagerness to apply them to the investment decision-making process. Specific qualifications for the position include: 

 

  • A minimum of 10+ years of equity research experience, including 3-5 years of relevant buy-side investing experience with a demonstrated track record evaluating multiple sectors and business models.  

  • A strong track record of making successful investment recommendations and generating alpha across multiple dimensions in the Japanese market 

  • Strong bottom-up fundamental research with a value-oriented investment approach 

  • Good knowledge of sustainability related issues including ESG pillars 

  • Ability to build relationships and collaborate with experienced, cross-functional investment teams 

  • Self-motivated; willing and able to complete tasks independently and come to conclusions based on incomplete information. 

  • Intellectual curiosity and comfort taking risks 

  • Self-awareness and self-confidence to be comfortable “being wrong” 

  • Growth mindset – The flexibility and openness to continue learning, evolving and growing as an investor is required.   

  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills and experience in a collaborative, team-based, results-oriented environment 

  • Strong work ethic and attention to detail 

  • Strong academic credentials, MBA/CFA preferred. 

Strong verbal and written communication skills in nativelevel Japanese and businessfluent English
