Service delivery
• Conduct basic vulnerability screening for communicable and non-communicable conditions to identify risks and refer appropriately, including:
1. COVID-19
2. HIV/AIDS (support HTS)
3. STIs
4. TB
5. Mental health (basic screening and referral)
6. Hypertension and diabetes (basic screening)
• Support campus-based COVID-19 screening initiatives to reduce transmission
• Provide HIV Testing Services (HTS) in line with guidelines and refer clients for further management and care
• Support TB screening, adherence education, and refer clients for preventive therapy and treatment.
• Assist with reproductive health services, including pregnancy screening and referral to appropriate care
• Provide short-acting contraceptives and support family planning education, with referral for long-acting methods where required.
• Assist with cervical cancer screening programs (e.g., preparation, patient support, and follow-up coordination) in collaboration with relevant services
• Ensure effective referral and linkage to care for all identified conditions, including follow-up support
• Utilize telemedicine to support:
• Virtual health education and counseling
• Remote follow-ups and adherence support
• Screening guidance and referral coordination
• Continuity of care, especially for remote or underserved students
• Maintain accurate clinical records, data capture, and reporting in accordance with protocols and confidentiality standards
• Adhere to infection prevention and control (IPC) measures and support quality assurance in service delivery
Communication and Advocacy
• Participate in various trainings with district health and Higher Health training programs, including the use of telemedicine platforms for continuous professional development
• Participate in district health forums and AIDS councils with Campus Health & Wellness coordinators, incorporating virtual/telemedicine-enabled engagements where applicable
• Participate in local forums with Campus Health & Wellness coordinators, utilizing both in-person and telemedicine channels to strengthen collaboration and outreach
• Liaise with relevant partners for support, including coordination and promotion of telemedicine and digital health services
• Liaise with health facilities for the collection of testing kits, supplies, and commodities, as well as the delivery of specimens to assigned facilities, and support telemedicine-based referrals and results communication
• Monitor the health status of students and staff through both direct engagement and telemedicine platforms to enable timely interventions and follow-up
• Set up and manage schedules for campus clinic visits and mobile testing stations, while integrating telemedicine sessions to expand access to health services and improve service coverage.
Health Safety & Wellness
• Support the implementation of health promotion and disease prevention programmes (e.g., smoking cessation, physical activity, healthy eating) for students and staff, including virtual health education and follow-up through telemedicine
• Observe and report potential health and safety risks within the campus environment, and support emergency and disaster preparedness activities in line with institutional protocols
• Facilitate access to healthcare and wellness services by screening, referring, and directing students and staff to appropriate services (e.g., rehabilitation, disability support, GBV, mental health, LGBTQI+ services), including coordination of telemedicine-based referrals
• Assist with basic health education and counseling on physical and mental health concerns, and refer students to appropriate support services, including virtual counselling where available
• Support the management of health commodities by assisting with stock control, storage, and distribution of medical supplies in accordance with guidelines
• Ensure safe handling, segregation, and disposal of medical waste in compliance with infection prevention and control (IPC) standards and health regulations
Administration
• Maintain general facilities administration at both campus and provincial office level, including coordination of telemedicine infrastructure and digital health systems
• Ensure proper waste disposal in accordance with health regulations, including management of medical waste in line with infection prevention and control standards
• Maintain stock control, inventory management, and proper storage of medical supplies and commodities, including tracking usage for both in-person and telemedicine-supported services
• Ensure that specimen handling, collection, and delivery are conducted strictly in accordance with health regulations, including coordination of results and feedback via telemedicine platforms where applicable
• Manage and maintain all assets, including medical equipment and telemedicine tools and devices
• Oversee the management and supervision of staff allocated to the clinic, including coordination of both on-site and telemedicine service delivery
• Maintain accurate registers for reporting daily statistics of students and staff attended to, including those reached through telemedicine services
• Document all student and staff illnesses and injuries, ensuring proper record-keeping across both physical and telemedicine consultations
Data Reporting
• Maintain a register for reporting of stats of students and staff attended to daily.
• Documenting all students & staff illnesses and injuries.
• Developing reports as per DOH and Higher Health reporting templates.
• Submit daily, weekly, monthly reports of student & staff health status as agreed with Management.
• Provide comprehensive, safe and effective evidence based clinical procedures to achieve identified health outcomes
• Assists in efficient clinic preparation and closure to achieve blood collection targets.
• Fulfil the responsibilities of this role in accordance with the South African Nursing Council
• Ensure that phlebotomy procedures are undertaken professionally according to standard operating procedures
• Undertake basic physical check/assessment according to scope of practice.
• Assist other health professional in the pre-screening, treatment and care of patients.
• Update TB, HIV and ART Clinical Stationery
• Plan and evaluate clinical procedures in consultation with the multidisciplinary team
• Provide progress reports and recommendations on increasing the effectiveness and efficiency of processes
Requirements
Qualification
• Enrolled Nurse Qualification
• Current registration with the South African Nursing Council.
• HIV/AIDS Counseling and Management Certificate.
Experience
• Minimum 2 years’ related experience and/or training
• Minimum 3 years’ experience in clinical or public health research
• Extensive counseling experience Mid-level computer skills essential
• Intermediate Microsoft Office skills (Excel, Word, PowerPoint)
• Minimum 3 years’ experience in HIV/AIDS and TB related accountabilities
• Blood collection for baseline, PCR and viral load
