As an Engineering Manager, you will drive the delivery of high-quality software by leading a high-performing inclusive team focused on Xero's front end competitiveness. You will act as the technical anchor, balancing predictable roadmap delivery with a relentless focus on team growth, technical excellence, and driving product delivery velocity while upholding operational excellence.
Your leadership will guide the team to hone their craft, champion AI-native workflows, and resolve complex technical challenges. By defining and delivering executable engineering plans that align with business goals, you will positively impact the user and developer experience across the whole of Xero.
The team / how they connect
You will lead the Small Business Experience (SBEX) team, which consists of eight engineers located in Melbourne and Sydney. The team works together to improve the competitiveness of Xero’s front end, collaborating closely with stakeholders across Product and Design to ensure technical decisions balance speed and quality.
The team is currently working on / Initially, you will focus on
Building a brand new team from the ground up and establishing a backlog of work dedicated to improving Xero's front end competitiveness.
Leveraging a modern front end stack including React, TypeScript, and SPA/MFE architectures to build complex web applications at scale.
Improving web performance and reliability in a systematic way by defining metrics, identifying bottlenecks, and driving sustainable improvements.
Championing AI-assisted engineering workflows to boost velocity and reduce toil across the software development life cycle.

Here are some of the things we are looking for
You bring deep experience in modern front end engineering, specifically with substantial hands-on knowledge of building complex web applications using modern stack like React and Typescript.
Your background includes a track record of owning cross-cutting work such as design system implementations, shared UI libraries, or front end pipelines.
You have a natural ability to coach and develop engineers, with experience in performance management and building inclusive, high-trust team environments.
You possess strong architectural fluency for front end systems, allowing you to reason about trade-offs in deployment, observability, and error handling.
Your communication style allows you to influence across multiple disciplines, establishing standards and driving the adoption of platform to improve developer experience.
You demonstrate curiosity and willingness to explore AI tools to assist with coding, testing, and documentation.
