Position Overview / Purpose: 

We are looking for an Engineering Manager – Product Platform to play a key role in shaping and strengthening the foundation of the team.

In this position, you will lead multiple engineering contributors, ensuring our product platform remain robust, compliant, and ready for the future.

As an Engineering Manager within our Product Platform organisation, you will operate guiding and Tech Leads and Software Engineers while ensuring strong alignment across teams and functions.

You will be responsible for the health, stability, and evolution of our product platforms, balancing people leadership, technical direction, and delivery excellence. Working within a regulated medical device environment, you will collaborate closely with engineering, verification, quality, security, and regulatory teams to deliver solutions that are both innovative and compliant.

This is a role for a leader who combines technical credibility with strong people leadership, and who thrives in complex, cross-functional environments.

What You Will Do

Lead and Develop High-Performing Engineering Team

  • Build a strong engineering culture focused on predictable delivery, quality, and continuous improvement

  • Lead, coach, and develop Tech Leads and engineers, strengthening leadership depth and succession readiness

  • Ensure clear priorities, structured leadership routines, and a psychologically safe, inclusive environment

  • Drive recruitment, onboarding, and long-term capability planning

Own Technical Direction & Platform Integrity

  • Define and evolve the technical roadmap for product platform components

  • Contribute to architecture and design governance alongside Tech Leads

  • Stay close to complex technical challenges and risk areas

  • Promote modern engineering practices including secure coding, CI/CD, and automation

Drive Cross-Team Integration & Delivery Alignment

  • Ensure alignment across software, embedded, verification, quality, and regulatory teams

  • Manage dependencies, integration points, and release readiness milestones

  • Reduce architectural complexity and improve platform interfaces and boundaries

Lead Through Tech Leads & Strengthen Engineering Governance

  • Lead a group of Tech Leads across platform domains with clear ownership and accountability

  • Establish strong governance rhythms (design reviews, decision logs, roadmap alignment)

  • Embed engineering discipline required in regulated environments (traceability, testability, reproducibility)

Partner with Stakeholders & Provide Clear Leadership Insight

  • Collaborate across R&D, Quality, Regulatory, and Delivery

  • Provide clear reporting on platform health, risks, and progress

  • Ensure visibility and prioritisation of technical debt and defects

Champion Quality & Compliance

  • Ensure adherence to medical device regulations and Cochlear’s Quality Management System (QMS)

  • Embed quality into daily engineering practices

  • Balance agile delivery with regulatory discipline

What You Bring

Required

  • Proven experience as an Engineering Manager leading software teams in complex environments

  • Strong experience leading through Tech Leads

  • Ability to build leadership depth and scalable team structures

  • Solid technical background with the ability to engage in architecture and design decisions

  • Strong communication and stakeholder alignment skills across diverse functions

  • Excellent technical English

  • Master’s or PhD degree in a relevant scientific or engineering discipline (or equivalent). For candidates with degrees obtained outside Belgium, a formal recognition process may be required as part of the hiring journey. Support will be provided

Preferred

  • Experience in medical device software or other regulated industries

  • Background in platform engineering, middleware, or shared components

  • Experience driving engineering maturity, CI/CD, and automation practices

  • Strong track record in improving quality, reliability, and engineering standards
