About the team

The group is responsible for offering data serving infrastructure spanning across data warehouse analytics, streaming analytics and search capabilities. The stack is supported by a collection of internally developed large scale distributed services and several popular open source technologies like Trino/Presto, Apache Pinot, Hive Metastore, ElasticSearch etc. The systems we own support all of the data serving needs of high scale services and thousands of individual Stripes across the company. We process hundreds of thousands of search and analytics shaped queries on petabytes of data ingested through real-time streaming and large batch ingestion pipelines. We are the data serving layer for one of the largest financial data lakes in the world.

We are looking for a manager who is excited about Data Serving architecture and leading a team to solve challenging distributed systems problems, as well as developing empathetic partnerships with other Stripe teams to understand their use-cases and unlock new capabilities.

What you’ll do

You will support a team of engineers focused on building the tooling, infra and systems for operating Spark, Hadoop or Iceberg at Stripe. In addition to helping define the roadmap for these systems, you will be interacting with many other managers and their teams at Stripe, who rely on the Data processing Infra team to deliver efficient and scalable services to our customers. You will work with both the finance and engineering organization (infrastructure & product) to define, measure and monitor the cost efficiency of these systems. 

Responsibilities

• Drive the roadmap and priorities for the team, and work with other engineering teams across the company.
• Support the team in achieving a high level of technical excellence and stability.
• Be opinionated in building the team's technical vision and play a primary role in technical decision making.
• Hire and develop talent on the team.

Minimum requirements

• 10+ years of software development experience
• 3+ years of engineering management experience
• Experience building strong technical teams that balance operational excellence, collaboration and user needs
• Experience working in highly cross-functional organizations
• Proven track record of building large scale, complex distributed systems with open source tools; identifying shortcomings and optimization opportunities; and making data driven cost performance tradeoffs to influence design decisions

Preferred qualifications

• Experience in managing development team in AWS/Azure/OCI/GCP
• Experience managing remote and distributed teams
• Experience working closely across geographies
• Familiarity with managing a large fleet of Linux servers, Hadoop clusters, Kubernetes clusters, databases, and control planes
• Experience with managing large-scale batch and real-time data pipelines (Spark, Airflow, Flink, Kafka)
• Experience with performance optimization and cloud capacity planning
• Experience in building consumer/customer facing products
