What you will do:
Johnson Controls invites you to apply for a year-round internship opportunity within our Product Development team. This internship offers hands-on experience in embedded firmware development for HVAC field devices such as sensors, actuators, and controllers. You’ll collaborate with experienced engineers to support the design, development, and testing of embedded systems that drive building automation and environmental control.
How you will do it:
As an Embedded Firmware Engineering Intern focused on HVAC Field Devices, you will:
Assist in developing and debugging embedded firmware for HVAC sensors, actuators, and control modules
Write and maintain test scripts and validation tools for embedded systems
Participate in engineering-level testing of HVAC field devices and embedded platforms
Support documentation efforts for firmware architecture, test procedures, and engineering reports
Collaborate with cross-functional teams including hardware, software, and systems engineering
Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives in embedded development processes
Perform other engineering-related tasks and projects as assigned
What we look for
Required Qualifications:
Pursuing a degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Software Engineering, or related field
Located in the greater Milwaukee area and available to work full time during the summer and at least 20 hours/week during the semester and full-time during breaks
Strong programming skills in C/C++ for embedded systems
Familiarity with microcontroller platforms (e.g., ARM Cortex-M, STM32)
Understanding of embedded debugging tools (e.g., JTAG, SWD, oscilloscopes)
Comfortable working with version control systems like Git
Proficiency in Microsoft Office tools (Excel, PowerPoint, Word)
Highly organized with strong communication skills
U.S. citizen or legally authorized to work in the U.S.
Self-motivated and adaptable to changing priorities
This is a year-round internship with high expectations.
Preferred Qualifications:
Exposure to HVAC systems and building automation technologies
Experience with BACnet, Modbus, or other field communication protocols
Familiarity with real-time operating systems (RTOS) and low-power embedded design
Knowledge of scripting languages like Python for test automation
Ideal candidate is a Freshman or Sophomore seeking long-term internship experience
HIRING HOURLY RANGE: $21.00 - $24.00 (Hourly rate to be determined by the education, experience, knowledge, skills, and abilities of the applicant, internal equity, location and alignment with market data.)
