The Space Systems Group (SSG) serves as the technical and programmatic advisor to the United States Space Force's (USSF's) Space Systems Command (SSC) [formerly Space and Missile Systems Center (SMC)] for acquiring, developing and fielding capabilities for the United States Space Command and joint warfighter as well as to maintain America's comprehensive military advantage in space.
As the Project Engineer / Sr. Project Engineer for the Space Data Transport prototype program within the Demonstration and Technology Department, you will support Aerospace's efforts to field a Government interoperability test bed and oversee space flight hardware development in support of SSC's multi-organization Enterprise vision for a new era of resilient space systems utilizing a space-to-space communication network architecture. You will be part of a team supporting numerous fast paced advanced technology programs including on-orbit demonstrations and prototypes, ground testbeds and advanced technology maturation for SSC's Development Corps Innovation and Prototyping Directorate.
What You'll Be Doing

  • Coordinate day-to-day execution of diverse in-house software development and hardware integration to drive the rapid fielding of an Aerospace built space networking communication test bed to support architecture analysis, flight program risk reduction and interoperability testing for the SSC Enterprise
  • Develop technical artifacts and acquisition strategy documents for a prototype space network controller concept to enable development of a proto-flight test article aligned with the SSC Enterprise architectural vision and roadmap for near term flight opportunities
  • Work closely with The Aerospace Corporation's engineering matrix organization and project managers to integrate testbed development milestones into an integrated execution schedule aligned with transition plans and test events
  • Develop model-based systems engineering (MBSE) models for architectural, CONOPS and design interface information across the program and mission area. Guide implementation and integration of MBSE products for the broader SSC Cross Mission Data Transport (XMDT) architecture
  • Support architecture and system trade assessments, requirement decomposition analysis, CONOPS and interface validation, as well as system level integration, test and verification activities
  • Interact daily with Government customer leaders and other stakeholders across the program to align prototype objectives with operational needs

What You Need to be Successful
Minimum Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree or higher in a relevant Engineering, Math or Science subject area
  • Typically 8 years of experience in engineering, computer science, or technology development.
  • Experience with networking & communication systems to included network management, cybersecurity and radio and/or optical space communications
  • Understanding of systems engineering and integration for complex computer and/or communication network systems
  • Experience developing prototypes, demonstrations and testbeds to meet challenging requirements with planned transition to operational systems
  • Familiarity with model-based system engineering (MBSE) tools and models
  • Ability to comprehend complex technical details and discuss with engineering staff, managers, customers and a team of government support contractors
  • Ability to travel approximately 10 percent of the time
  • This position requires a current and active TS/SCI security clearance, which is issued by the U.S. government; and U.S citizenship is required to obtain a security clearance


What You Need to be Successful - Senior Project Engineer
Minimum Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree or higher in a relevant Engineering, Math or Science subject area
  • Typically 12 years of progressively more responsible related experience in engineering, computer science, or technology development.
  • Technical experience in the following networking & communication systems areas: system requirement definition, research and development, networking, cyber, cryptology, cloud computing, communication waveforms, radio and/or optical space communications
  • Background in systems engineering and integration with demonstrated success in fielding highly complex computer and/or communication network systems
  • Experience managing technical projects and leading multidisciplinary teams to rapidly field prototypes to meet challenging requirements that effectively transition to operational systems
  • Experience with model-based system engineering (MBSE) tools, data ontologies/standards and model development
  • Demonstrated ability to succinctly describe complex technical issues to engineering staff, managers and customers to influence outcomes
  • Ability to travel approximately 10 percent of the time
  • This position requires a current and active TS/SCI security clearance, which is issued by the U.S. government; and U.S citizenship is required to obtain a security clearance


How You Can Stand Out
It would be impressive if you have one or more of these:

  • Experience in space systems, space technology development, DoD acquisition processes and/or activities related to Combat Bus, Combat Cloud, and Resiliency Systems Engineering
  • Hands on experience building, integrating, and testing APIs, cybersecurity and/or communication networking systems
  • Relevant Government program office acquisition experience to include process, strategy, contracts, and cost/schedule/performance/risk trades
  • Demonstrated ability to work in a high-pressure environment with rapidly changing priorities and a demanding customer
  • Understanding of the networking and cybersecurity principles from the Open Network Foundation and/or NIST and DoD instructions
