NATURE AND SCOPE

Borg Warner manufactures friction elements, clutches, and other transmission systems for automobiles, industrial equipment, and aircraft.  Borg Warner has a non-traditional heavy team organizational structure.

Since team projects include both new products and process development and the refinement of existing products, the incumbent's job responsibilities necessitates communication with a wide variety of individuals.  Team activities will require contact with Production Departments, Prototype Build, Design/CAD, Quality Assurance, Purchasing, Financial, Engineering Test, and Management.  In addition, there will be outside contacts with component vendors, engineering consultants, and most importantly the customer.  The incumbent therefore must possess the necessary oral and written language skills to communicate clearly and effectively in a manner which generates positive results.

The incumbent is responsible for the planning, scheduling, execution, and coordination of all phases of his/her work from initiation of a project through production.  Within the team environment, this includes defining the product, product design, and aiding in process selection.  To facilitate product development, the incumbent must actively support and execute concurrent engineering activities within the Bellwood Plant and support those same activities with both vendors and customers.  The incumbent is expected to rearrange priorities based on the changing needs of the team.  As the product expert within the team environment, the incumbent provides technical product leadership to new and existing products.  At times, it may be necessary for the incumbent to devise new and creative approaches to solve problems, to design new products, to utilize new materials, and to make cost reductions.  The incumbent is expected to be able to resolve problems and overcome obstacles with the help of team support.

A continuing awareness of existing technology within the incumbent's area of specialty must be maintained through exposure to professional journals, attendance at trade shows, and formal course work.  Due to the exposure to highly sensitive technical information, the incumbent must be a person of high integrity.  Teamwork is essential to obtaining the required support needed to provide solutions to problems encountered.
