Job Title:
Engineer II, Membrane Development EngineerJob Description:
Position Summary:
The Membrane Development Engineer will play a key role in the design, development, and optimization of advanced membrane materials used in semiconductor filtration applications. This role involves hands on formulation, casting, and characterization of immersion cast membranes, as well as collaboration with cross functional teams in R&D, manufacturing, marketing, and quality. The engineer will contribute to both early stage technology development and scaleup activities that support new product introduction.
Responsibilities:
Develop and optimize nonsolvent induced phase separation (NIPS) processes for producing immersion cast membranes.
Formulate polymer solutions, design experiments, and evaluate membrane morphology, performance, and reliability.
Conduct laboratory scale trials and support pilot scale or manufacturing scale runs.
Analyze membrane performance using characterization tools such as porometry, SEM, mechanical testing, permeability/retention tests, and chemical compatibility evaluations.
Collaborate with process engineering to transfer technology from lab scale to production.
Document experiments, create technical reports, and present findings to internal stakeholders.
Work with procurement, marketing, and product management to support cost, performance, and timeline objectives.
Troubleshoot material, process, or equipment issues related to membrane development.
Maintain safe laboratory practices, following all EH&S protocols.
Support customer interactions and technical discussions as needed.
Qualifications and Preferred Skills:
Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Chemical Engineering, Materials Science, Polymer Science, Chemistry, or a related field.
Genuine passion for scientific research, experimentation, and problem solving.
A strong can-do attitude, with the ability to tackle challenges proactively and independently.
Experience with membranes, polymers, or porous materials (academic research, internships, or industrial work).
Strong fundamental understanding of transport phenomena, polymer chemistry, thermodynamics of polymer solutions, polymer phase separation and rheology.
Handson experience with solution preparation, wet chemistry, materials processing, or related laboratory work.
Familiarity with analytical and materials characterization techniques (SEM, FTIR, porometry, mechanical testing, etc.).
Excellent communication skills and ability to work collaboratively in a crossfunctional environment.
Physical Requirements:
Ability to work in a laboratory setting for extended periods, including standing, walking, and performing hands-on experiments.
Ability to lift and handle laboratory materials, chemical containers, or equipment up to approximately 25–30 pounds.
Manual dexterity for operations such as membrane casting, sample preparation, and equipment setup.
Comfortable wearing appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE), including lab coats, gloves, safety glasses, and, when required, respirators.
Ability to work safely with chemicals, solvents, and laboratory tools following established safety procedures.
Visual acuity to accurately perform experimental work, observe membranes, and read instruments or displays.
