Design Engineer, Junior
Job Summary
Find innovative ways to create products that are functional and meet client wants and needs. Modify existing systems or develop new ideas for processes to make them more efficient. Under general supervision, carry out drafting assignments of a routine to moderately complex nature. Convert product design sketches into working documents by digitizing with Computer Aided Design (CAD). Produce complete drawings, review engineering drawings and support documentation. May take appropriate action to resolve details not completely defined. Final drawings/designs must display completeness, clarity, and accuracy.
Responsibility
- Create detailed drawings of complex and unusual parts to be manufactured at an external site.
- Be able to design complex components or systems from a clean sheet of paper with little or no supervision.
- Use 3D printer to efficiently produce simple designs and models.
- Ensure accuracy of models and prints for conformance and correctness to standards.
- Continue to stay current in training in the latest technology in CAD and awareness of modern manufacturing processes.
- Comply with all applicable company policies and procedures (i.e. Quality System Procedures).
Prepare and log Engineering drawings (process spec, tooling drawings).
Support Program Managers/Project Engineers with process documentation as necessary.
Create fully detailed engineering drawings that contain all necessary information from required specifications.
Control/Update Plant Layout.
Ensure that all engineering documents are kept updated and record the correct revision.
- Occasional hands-on work for prototyping and testing.
Adhere to all H&S and environmental laws and procedures.
Other duties as assigned.
Academic/Educational Requirements
Completion of a two-to-three-year college program in engineering design and drafting technology or in a related field is required or completion of a three-to-four-year apprenticeship program or four to five years of related experience plus completion of college or industry courses in drafting is required.

Ability to read, write, speak and understand English fluently.
Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions and decimals.
Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
Ability to meet or exceed the company’s attendance standards.
Ability to understand and follow directions given.
Ability to work with minimal supervision.
Proficient in AutoCAD, SolidWorks or related 3D engineering modeling software, and Microsoft Office (Excel).
Ability to read schematics, assembly drawings, blueprints, product specifications and geometric dimensioning tolerance (GD&T).
Ability to work in a team environment to share opinions with co-workers, colleagues and peers about successful projects, problematic projects and drafting techniques. Meet with engineers, designers, other drafting professionals and various consultants to obtain additional information, clarification and feedback about drawings and to discuss projects' challenges.
Ability to work independently while ensuring work meets the designers', engineers', technologists’ or operators’ vision.

Skills Required
- Completion of a 2-3 year college program in engineering design/drafting, apprenticeship, or equivalent experience plus related courses
- Proficiency in SolidWorks or AutoCAD or related 3D engineering modeling software
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office Excel
- Ability to read schematics, assembly drawings, blueprints, product specifications and GD&T
- Experience converting sketches/redlines into detailed CAD models and production-ready drawings
- Experience designing fixtures, gauges, tooling, or manufacturing aids (HPDC familiarity preferred)
- Experience with 3D printing for prototyping
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills; ability to work independently and in teams
- Basic math competency (add, subtract, multiply, divide in various units) and English fluency
- Ability to follow directions, meet attendance standards, and adhere to HSE regulations
