POSITION SUMMARY:

Reporting to the Ambulance Director, the EMT works as a member of a team to provide medical care to the sick and injured in accordance with established protocols.

This position description is intended to identify some of the duties and responsibilities of this position. modoc medical center reserves the right to modify, supplement, delete or augment the duties and responsibilities specified in this position description, at MODOC MEDICAL CENTER’S sole and absolute discretion.


POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES:

General Competencies:

  1. Always demonstrates a professional behavior, both when on duty and as a representative of the hospital outside of normal work hours.
  2. Always demonstrates a positive working relationship with patients, visitors and facility staff. Respectfully to managers and supervisors.
  3. Demonstrates organizational ability and time management.
  4. Produces deliverable products on time, within budget with minimal direction.
  5. Demonstrates the ability to compile and organize data using Microsoft Office Applications. Ability to make appropriate recommendations or conclusions, given the data obtained.
  6. Maintains an organized set of records, delivers records immediately upon request, for the functions that are performed within the scope of this job.
  7. Communicates appropriately, respectfully, and clearly to directors, managers, and coworkers. Accepts direction as provided without questioning authority, within the chain of command.
  8. Performs all assigned tasks accurately.
  9. Takes direction from others to include those employees of other departments with which he/she works on a temporary basis in accordance with the chain of command.
  10. Demonstrates ability to effectively use office machines in the performance of job functions.
  11. Answers phone calls, assists public, and forwards appropriately if necessary in a professional and friendly manner.
  12. Performs other duties as assigned.

Specific Competencies:

  1. Provides care to the sick and injured in various environments, working within the scope of practice for an EMT, as defined and regulated by NorCal EMS and the State of California.
  2. Consistently demonstrates a high level of customer service and professional responsibility which portrays a positive image of Modoc Medical Center and its employees.
  3. Safely drives ambulance and operates related equipment in a safe, efficient manner.
  4. Stocks, cleans and maintain ambulances and related equipment in a safe and ready to respond condition.
  5. Documents activities, needs and events using prescribed methods.
  6. Acts as medical officer in charge of an incident, or ambulance crew leader when no higher qualified person is available.
  7. Accepts direction and guidance when working in a subordinate role.
  8. Cleans and maintains buildings and grounds of ambulance stations, offices, and living quarters.
  9. Maintains a cooperative team atmosphere with other crew members, hospital employees and allied agency staff. 
  10. Maintains availability for on-call duties in accordance with current hospital policy.
  11. Provides training to other employees and allied agency employees where qualified to do so.
  12. Maintains awareness of potentially dangerous situations and take appropriate action to ensure safety of self, other employees, patients, and the public.
  13. Maintains physical fitness and participate in didactic and skill training/enhancement activities as directed.
  14. Performs other duties appropriate to the employee’s knowledge, skills and abilities as assigned.

Professional Requirements:

  1. Adheres to dress code; appearance is neat and professional.
  2. Completes annual education requirements if applicable.
  3. Maintains regulatory requirements.
  4. Wears identification while on duty.
  5. Attends annual evaluation and participates actively in this process.
  6. Reports to work on time and as scheduled; completes work in designated time.
  7. Attends all meetings as appropriate.
  8. Exhibits the mission, ethics and goals of Modoc Medical Center in the performance of job duties

WORKING CONDITIONS:

  1. Works significantly beyond normal working hours, and in other positions temporarily when necessary.
  2. May work nights, weekends and holidays, as necessary.
  3. Regularly work in extreme environmental conditions such as heat/cold, wet/dry, noisy, dark/light.
  4. Regularly work under emotionally stressful conditions associated with the serious illness, injury, or death of pediatric, adult and/or geriatric patients.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  1. Requires tactile/auditory/olfactory/visual perceptions and gross and fine motor skills to safely and effectively perform all job duties. 
  2. Able to walk, stand or sit continuously as necessary to perform duties of position. 
  3. Able to perform tasks such as bending, crawling, stooping, kneeling or working prone or supine as necessary for patient care.
  4. Able to lift up to 35 pounds without assistance. 
  5. Able to grasp, carry, and balance a gurney, patient and equipment weighing (combined) up to 250 pounds down two (2) steps and for a 15 yard distance over uneven  terrain with the assistance of a 2nd crew member.
  6. Able to don and utilize standard EMS personal protective equipment including respirators which cover the mouth and nose.
  7. Able to work in extreme conditions such as heat/cold, wet/dry, noisy, dark/light.
  8. Able to safely operate ambulances in hazardous weather conditions on varying types of terrain and road surface.
  9. Able to communicate effectively, in English using standard radio and telephone links.
Qualifications

POSITION QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. Currently certified as an EMT 1 within the state of California and the NorCal EMS region.
  2. Current BLS level CPR certification.
  3. Possession of a valid California Ambulance Driver’s Certificate.
  4. Mental acuity and reasoning ability sufficient to perform job duties in a safe, efficient manner.
  5. Temperament able to deal effectively with stresses produced by EMS work situations. 
  6. Capability to meet physical demands of job on an ongoing basis.
  7. Maintain a driving record acceptable to Modoc Medical Center’s insurance carriers.
  8. Able to use a typical desktop computer with basic applications.
  9. Successful completion of MMC approved ICS 100, 200 within one year of hire.
  10. Able to communicate in English both verbally and in writing.  
  11. Is dependable, reliable with good attendance and the ability to work with others, at all levels within the organization, and collaborate effectively.
  12. Above-average interpersonal, problem-solving, and written and oral communication skills.
  13. Must be a team player to all departments, confidential of sensitive data, respectful of all other staff members, considerate of other people’s time, and accountable for work output.

Skills Required

  • Current EMT I certification for California and NorCal EMS region
  • Current BLS (CPR) certification
  • Valid California Ambulance Driver's Certificate
  • Mental acuity and reasoning ability sufficient to perform job duties safely
  • Temperament able to handle EMS-related stresses
  • Capability to meet physical demands of the job on an ongoing basis
