At Houston Methodist, the Sr Electrophysiology Technician position is responsible for a variety of routine to complex diagnostic procedures related to pacemaker and defibrillator evaluations in both inpatient and outpatient settings. This position analyzes and reprograms devices utilized, requiring critical thinking and occasional physician or vendor participation. Under limited supervision, the Sr Electrophysiology Technician position is responsible for pacemaker/ defibrillator interrogation and programing, trans-telephonic pacemaker follow-up, remote monitoring, and follow-up of patients participating in research studies and clinical trials in electrophysiological studies. This position serves as a mentor to Electrophysiology Technicians and students by utilizing skills and knowledge to help train and educate others, working independently, exercising sound judgment and executing above average clinical skills on challenging diagnostic procedures and patient care situations. The Sr Electrophysiology Technician position performs other duties and services in support of the needs of our patients, their care and well-being. FLSA STATUS

QUALIFICATIONS
EDUCATION
  • Graduate of education program approved by the credentialing body for the required credential(s) indicated below in the Certifications, Licenses and Registrations section.

EXPERIENCE
  • Three years experience with electrophysiological devices (pacemaker, defibrillator); may consider HM Electrophysiology Technician with two years experience, of which one year has been at HM

LICENSES AND CERTIFICATIONS
Required
  • BLS - Basic Life Support or Instructor (AHA) - American Heart Association and
  • CET - Certified EKG Technician (NHA) - National Healthcare Association_PSV

  • Demonstrates the skills and competencies necessary to safely perform the assigned job, determined through on-going skills, competency assessments, and performance evaluations
  • Sufficient proficiency in speaking, reading, and writing the English language necessary to perform the essential functions of this job, especially with regard to activities impacting patient or employee safety or security

  • Facilitates open, professional (verbal, nonverbal, written) communication which includes active listening and teaching to achieve mutual understanding. Guides and mentors Electrophysiology Technicians and students to help build confidence in skills, knowledge and abilities. Offers guidance to interprofessional health care team, when appropriate, and applies feedback to improve patient outcomes.
  • Creates staffing schedules to include scheduled and unscheduled time off coverage.
  • Initiates recommendations for improvement of department scores for employee engagement, i.e. peer-to-peer accountability.

SERVICE ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
  • Accurately performs electrophysiology interrogations in a timely fashion, while ensuring precise and accurate data is transmitted for physician review and diagnosis.
  • Provides care for the physical needs of patients when conducting the interrogation. Educates patients on the purpose and techniques used during the exam and provides other appropriate information. Consistently evaluates the patient’s comprehension and adapts teaching methods accordingly. Proactively identifies issues and initiates actions for resolution in order to achieve optimum outcomes.
  • Provides direct assistance to physicians and other health care team members. Provides assistance to patients as needed to support their needs, care and well-being.
  • Helps drive improvement of department score for patient satisfaction, through peer-to-peer accountability for service standards.

QUALITY/SAFETY ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
  • Accurately recognizes and identifies cardiac anatomy. Recognizes rhythms and abnormal findings when performing interrogations or processing data and communicates immediately as appropriate to proper personnel. Ensures the quality of the study is succinct and clear to optimize diagnostics for the patient care team and interpreting physician.
  • Ensures all patient care equipment has had QC performed as required and is in safe working order prior to use. Reports any malfunctions and calls for service if needed.
  • Confirms all orders and verifies patient’s identification prior to performing the exam. Reports “near misses” and inputs errors promptly into PSN to improve processes and identify trends. Identifies trends and opportunities for corrective action and process improvement, providing recommendations. Contributes to meeting department and hospital targets for quality and patient safety.

FINANCE ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
  • Performs department charge reconciliation to include patient account edits. Provides accurate and complete documentation of patient procedures. Enters charges at the time service is delivered, when applicable.
  • Uses resources efficiently; does not waste supplies. Self-motivated to independently manage time effectively and prioritize daily tasks.

GROWTH/INNOVATION ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
  • Participates in departmental projects and shared governance activities. Participates in interrogation investigational/research activities, assisting with procedures and utilization of devices for these purposes.
  • Identifies own learning needs, consults with healthcare team experts and seeks continuing education opportunities to meet those needs to expand learning beyond baseline competencies with a focus on continual development. Completes and updates the My Development plan on an on-going basis.
