Job Description Summary

As a global leader in life sciences research support, STEMCELL Technologies is looking for an Electronics Engineer to join our Instrumentation UK engineering team. In this role, you will play a key role in supporting the continued manufacture, performance and evolution of our innovative cell sorting instruments, while also contributing to the development of our next generation of instrumentation.
As an Electronics Engineer, your initial priority will be sustaining engineering for our existing cell sorting platform, investigating technical and manufacturing issues, implementing design improvements, and supporting the product throughout its lifecycle. Alongside this, you will contribute to the design, development and transfer to manufacture of next-generation instrumentation as our product portfolio evolves.

Job Description

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Support ongoing product improvement and lead or support electronics-related quality investigations through problem investigation, root-cause analysis, design change, verification, and implementation into manufacture

  • Own and deliver sustaining engineering activities including management of component obsolescence, substitutions, supplier support, product lifetime improvements and cost reductions

  • Contribute to new product design, development and transfer to manufacture, including prototype builds, design verification, engineering documentation and design transfer

  • Design, simulate and test analogue and digital electronics within complex scientific instrumentation, including low-noise optical front-ends, ADCs, FPGAs, photodetectors, precise motor control and embedded processors

  • Integrate board-level communication interfaces including I2C, SPI, Ethernet, USB and NFC

  • Collaborate with software teams to support board bring-up using embedded C/C++ or VHDL/Verilog

  • Develop schematics and multi-layer, mixed-signal PCB layouts in Altium Designer, ensuring strict control over signal integrity, grounding, and EMC

  • Ensure new designs and engineering changes consider applicable safety, EMC and regulatory requirements, including standards such as IEC 61010, IEC 61326 and EN 301 489

Knowledge and Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Electronics Engineering, Electrical Engineering or a related discipline, with 2–6 years of relevant engineering experience (or an equivalent combination of education and experience)

  • Practical experience designing, simulating, and troubleshooting analogue and digital electronic systems incorporating power supplies, ADCs, motor/fan controllers, sensors, and interfaces (I2C, SPI, SMBus, Ethernet, USB)

  • Proficiency in schematic capture and multi-layer mixed-signal PCB layout, with circuit simulation experience being desirable

  • Hands-on experience using laboratory equipment (oscilloscopes, logic analysers, multimeters, VNAs) for bench testing, fault finding and board bring-up

  • Proven ability to perform root-cause analysis and deliver product lifecycle support in a manufacturing environment

  • Experience with FPGA firmware design (VHDL/Verilog including IP blocks, synthesis and place and route) is desirable

  • Strong communication and technical documentation skills, with the ability to work effectively across Engineering, Manufacturing, Quality, Service and Supply Chain teams
