We are looking for a talented Electronic Systems Technical Specialist – Hardware to join our team specializing in engineering for our Cummins’ business in Columbus, IN.
In this role, you will make an impact in the following ways:
Own and resolve complex electronic hardware issues by diagnosing root causes, applying structured problem‑solving methods, and documenting outcomes to prevent recurrence and improve product reliability.
Drive robust hardware design and validation through disciplined application of worst‑case analysis, simulation, DFMEA/PFMEA, FTA, and requirements analysis to balance cost, performance, and quality.
Deliver high‑quality prototype hardware by collaborating closely with electronic suppliers and application engineering teams, ensuring designs meet specifications and are ready for downstream integration.
Influence critical design decisions across requirements, architecture, and validation testing that directly impact unit cost, functionality, manufacturability, and delivery timelines.
Raise engineering rigor and reuse by reviewing and guiding less‑experienced developers’ and testers’ work to ensure designs are robust, efficient, and scalable.
Lead components and smaller projects independently—navigating ambiguity, owning outcomes end‑to‑end, and remaining fully accountable to project teams and stakeholders.
Improve hardware development processes and tools by leading enhancements within the discipline, strengthening consistency, efficiency, and technical excellence across the site or business unit.
Act as a technical leader and specialist—coordinating technicians and student engineers, transferring knowledge, influencing technical direction, and continuously deepening expertise in the discipline or product area.
ResponsibilitiesTo be successful in this role you will need the following:
Strong systems‑level engineering capability—integrating mechatronics, electrical, and mechanical design with modeling, simulation, and analysis to make sound architecture and design decisions that meet Cummins and customer requirements.
Rigorous product reliability and problem‑solving discipline—applying failure mode avoidance, structured root‑cause analysis, and robust corrective actions to protect the customer and prevent recurrence.
End‑to‑end verification and validation leadership—developing risk‑based validation plans, evaluating analytical and physical test results, and making timely, high‑quality decisions that balance requirements, capability, and scope.
Effective collaboration and execution under complexity—building strong networks, communicating clearly across audiences, valuing diverse perspectives, and deploying resources resourcefully to consistently drive results in ambiguous environments.
