The Opportunity:

Responsible for designing, developing, modifying, and evaluating electronic parts, components, integrated circuitry, printed circuit boards, and FPGA-based solutions for electronic equipment, hardware systems, and electrical engineering applications. Duties may include designing FPGA logic using VHDL/Verilog, developing firmware for soft-core and embedded processors, analyzing analog and digital circuits on equipment and printed circuit boards to establish operating data, conducting experimental tests and evaluating results, as well as selecting FPGA devices, components and equipment based on analysis of specifications, performance requirements, and reliability.

Responsibilities:

  • Characterize and document electronic systems: Research circuit components, printed circuit boards, FPGA architectures, and embedded systems; create detailed schematics, PCB layouts, HDL block diagrams, and firmware documentation; perform laboratory environment time and frequency domain tests and measurements to understand analog and digital circuit functions, FPGA logic behavior, and device operational purpose.
  • Analyze analog and mixed-signal circuits: Evaluate analog signal conditioning, power supply circuits, amplifiers, filters, ADC/DAC interfaces, and analog-to-digital conversion stages; measure and characterize analog performance parameters such as gain, bandwidth, noise, and linearity.
  • Analyze communication bus protocols: Work with various digital communication protocols like SPI, I2C, UART, PCIe, and Ethernet to understand data flow within devices and across printed circuit boards; implement and debug protocol interfaces in FPGA fabric and embedded firmware.
  • Design and implement FPGA solutions: Develop digital logic designs using VHDL/Verilog for signal processing, control systems, and custom interfaces; perform synthesis, place-and-route, and timing closure; conduct simulation and verification of FPGA designs for PCB integration, including interfaces to analog circuitry.
  • Develop embedded firmware: Write and optimize firmware for soft-core processors and other embedded processors; develop bare-metal code, device drivers, and hardware abstraction layers for analog sensors and mixed-signal peripherals; debug firmware using JTAG and other tools.
  • Characterize RF and analog signals: Measure and analyze radio frequency (RF) and analog signals from electronic devices and printed circuit boards to identify physical layer characteristics such as basic modulation schemes, operating frequencies, occupied bandwidths, transmission power, signal integrity, and analog performance metrics; support implementation of RF processing algorithms in FPGA when applicable.
  • Encode and decode modulation: Support the analysis, encoding, and decoding of different RF modulation types to extract data and understand signal encoding; contribute to the development of digital signal processing implementations for modulation and demodulation.
  • Contribute to technical reports: Integrate device characterization data, analog and digital circuit analysis, PCB analysis, FPGA design documentation, firmware architecture descriptions, and analysis summaries into coherent and comprehensive reports and briefings.
  • Research emerging technologies: Stay current with new electronic technologies, analog and mixed-signal design techniques, printed circuit board design techniques, FPGA devices, embedded processors, development tools, and analytical techniques.
  • Collaborate with experts: Work alongside skilled engineers and subject matter experts to tackle challenging problems in analog and digital hardware design, printed circuit board analysis, FPGA implementation, and firmware development to find innovative solutions.

Qualifications:

Required:

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Electrical Engineering Technology, Computer Engineering, or related field.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain a Top Secret clearance.
  • Proficiency in interpreting and understanding electronic schematics, printed circuit board layouts, FPGA block diagrams, and firmware architectures for both analog and digital circuits.
  • Solid understanding of electronic components and their functions, with an emphasis on analyzing analog and digital electronic circuits, printed circuit boards, and digital logic designs.
  • Experience with laboratory benchtop equipment, including oscilloscopes, spectrum analyzers, logic analyzers, signal generators, multimeters, and power supplies.
  • Experience with VHDL or Verilog programming for FPGA development.
  • Experience with embedded programming in C/C++ for microcontrollers or processors.
  • Experience with communication bus protocols such as SPI, I2C, UART, PCIe, and Ethernet, including implementation in HDL or firmware.
  • Capable of writing complex technical reports covering hardware designs, analog and digital circuit analysis, printed circuit board analysis, FPGA implementations, and firmware documentation.

Desired:

  • Experience with FPGA development tools such as Xilinx Vivado, Intel Quartus, Microchip Libero SoC, or similar.
  • Familiarity with soft-core processors (NIOS II, MicroBlaze, Mi-V RISC-V) and associated development environments.
  • Experience with FPGA simulation and verification tools (ModelSim, Vivado Simulator, etc.).
  • Knowledge of embedded debugging tools and techniques (JTAG, in-circuit debuggers, logic analyzers).
  • Understanding of digital signal processing (DSP) concepts and implementation in FPGA.
  • Experience with analog circuit design and analysis, including operational amplifiers, filters, voltage regulators, and sensor interface circuits.
  • Familiarity with circuit simulation tools (SPICE, LTspice, Multisim, etc.) for analog and mixed-signal analysis, and RF simulation software (ADS, AWR, HFSS, etc.) for RF design and analysis.
  • Proficiency in scripting languages (Python, TCL, MATLAB) for test automation and verification.
  • Familiarity with version control systems (Git, SVN) for HDL and firmware code management.
