Purpose of the Role

BGIS is seeking an experienced Electrical Engineer to support the design and delivery of commercial electrical infrastructure, electrical distribution, solar, and battery energy storage projects across New Zealand. Reporting directly to the Engineering Manager, you will work collaboratively with clients, contractors, suppliers, and BGIS teams to deliver high-quality engineering solutions that support safe, reliable, and sustainable operations.

This role plays a key part in ensuring engineering projects are delivered efficiently, comply with New Zealand standards and regulations, and meet client expectations for quality and performance.

The ideal candidate will be a practical, detail-oriented professional with strong technical expertise, excellent communication skills, sound commercial judgement, and a passion for delivering innovative engineering solutions.

Key Responsibilities
  • Design medium and large-scale low-voltage commercial electrical installations.
  • Support design and advisory services for low-voltage and high-voltage electrical distribution networks.
  • Prepare engineering designs for photovoltaic solar and battery energy storage systems. 🔋
  • Produce technical reports, calculations, specifications, drawings, and project documentation.
  • Review and prepare tender documentation, procurement information, and contractor submissions.
  • Liaise effectively with clients, contractors, suppliers, and key stakeholders throughout project delivery.
  • Ensure compliance with New Zealand electrical, building, health and safety, and industry standards.
  • Support project planning, engineering reviews, and technical problem-solving activities.
Education, Experience & Skills Essential
  • Bachelor of Electrical Engineering (NZ qualification or NZQA-recognised equivalent).
  • Minimum 4-5 years' experience in electrical engineering design.
  • New Zealand residency and a current New Zealand Driver Licence.
  • Proven experience designing medium and large-scale low-voltage commercial electrical installations.
  • Experience working with electrical distribution systems, including low and high-voltage networks.
  • Exposure to photovoltaic solar and battery energy storage system design.
  • Strong Microsoft Office skills, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Project.
  • Proficiency with AutoCAD and Microsoft Visio.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong technical report writing and documentation capability.
  • Sound understanding of New Zealand Health & Safety legislation and industry requirements.
Desirable
  • Chartered Professional Engineer (CPEng) status or working towards chartership.
  • Project management experience.
  • Tender preparation, procurement, and contract management experience.
  • Experience working across infrastructure, energy, utilities, or commercial facilities projects.
  • Knowledge of sustainability and renewable energy solutions.
