Description

Position Summary

The Electrical Battery Engineer III is a senior individual contributor responsible for the electrical design, analysis, and validation of battery cells, modules, and pack-level systems used in high-reliability applications (aerospace, defense, and/or industrial energy storage). This role owns technical decisions across the product lifecycle — from concept through qualification and production support — and serves as a technical resource for less-experienced engineers.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead electrical design of battery modules and packs, including cell selection, series/parallel configuration, protection circuitry, and BMS (Battery Management System) integration
  • Perform electrical analysis: voltage/current distribution, thermal-electrical interactions, impedance, state-of-charge/state-of-health estimation, and failure mode analysis (FMEA)
  • Develop and execute test plans for electrical performance, safety, and environmental qualification (e.g., abuse testing, overcharge/short circuit, vibration, thermal cycling) in accordance with standards such as MIL-PRF, DO-311, UN 38.3, or UL 1642/2580
  • Support NDAA/DFARS compliance efforts, including sourcing traceability for cells and components (relevant to defense-focused battery programs)
  • Collaborate with mechanical, thermal, and systems engineering teams to ensure integrated pack design meets performance, safety, and regulatory requirements
  • Create and maintain engineering documentation: schematics, wiring diagrams, test reports, and design verification records
  • Support root cause investigations for field or production issues and implement corrective actions
  • Interface with customers and suppliers on technical requirements, design reviews, and qualification data
  • Mentor junior engineers (Engineer I/II) and review their design and test work
  • Support new product introduction (NPI) and transition of designs from prototype to production

Requirements

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Electrochemical Engineering, or related  Field (Master's preferred)
  • 5–8+ years of experience in battery/energy storage system design, preferably in aerospace, defense, EV, or industrial applications
  • Strong working knowledge of lithium-ion and/or other advanced cell chemistries
  • Experience with BMS design/integration, protection circuit design, and electrical safety analysis
  • Proficiency with circuit development,  simulation and analysis tools (e.g., Altium Designer, MATLAB/Simulink)
  • Familiarity with relevant industry/military standards (MIL-STD-810, DO-160, UN 38.3, UL, IEC 62133)
  • Strong documentation and technical writing skills
  • Ability to obtain/maintain a security clearance or meet ITAR/EAR requirements, if applicable

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with NDAA-compliant battery programs and Chinese-cell-component exclusion requirements
  • Hands-on experience with battery pack manufacturing and laser welding processes
  • Exposure to both high-voltage and low-voltage battery system architectures
  • Six Sigma / Lean manufacturing familiarity
  • Prior experience in a regulated or defense-contracting environment (ITAR/EAR, DFARS)

Physical/Work Environment

  • Primarily office/lab environment with occasional time on the production floor
  • Occasional travel for customer meetings, supplier audits, or qualification testing

Skills Required

  • Expertise in Batteries and Energy Storage including knowledge of charging systems and performance optimization
  • 10+ years of experience as an Electrical or Electronic Engineer
  • Experience with electrical CAD tools (e.g., Altium Designer)
  • Experience with simulation software (MATLAB/Simulink)
  • Programming experience in C++ or Python
  • Strong foundation in power system design and circuit analysis
  • Proven R&D experience delivering innovative engineering solutions
  • Demonstrated experience preparing and presenting technical reports
  • Direct experience developing, designing, modifying, installing, testing, evaluating, and operating electrical/electronic/systems equipment
  • Experience performing test and evaluation of systems, equipment, and components and compiling/analyzing test data
  • Experience reviewing, analyzing, developing, and applying engineering specifications, policies, standards, or procedures
  • Bachelor's degree or higher in Electrical Engineering, Materials Science, or related field
  • Desired 3+ years of experience specifically with Batteries and Energy Storage
  • Familiarity with ISO9001 and AS9100 quality systems
  • U.S. Citizenship (no visa sponsorship)
