The Opportunity:

Avantor | NuSil Technologies is looking for an EHS Specialist to join our Bakersfield, CA facility.
 
This role will be a full-time position based in Bakersfield, CA. Some domestic travel expected (up to 20%). 

The team 

Our NuSil Environmental Health Safety (EHS) business unit provides and maintains a safe working environment for our chemical manufacturing facility.

What we’re looking for 

  • Education: High School Diploma or GED is required; Bachelors degree in a safety-related and/or equivalent field is preferred

  • Experience: 1-2 years of experience in chemical manufacturing or other heavy industrial manufacturing industry or equivalent 

    • Will be required to pass pulmonary function test in order to wear a respirator. 

  • Collaboration Tool: Microsoft Office experience is required 

  • Preferred Qualifications: 

    • 3 years or more of direct EHS experience

    • Process Safety Management subject facility experience

    • Oil industry EHS experience

    • Associate Safety Professional (ASP), Essentials of Hazardous Materials Management (EHMM), and / or Occupational Hygiene and Safety Technician (OHST) certification or greater

The Specialist will be familiar with specific strategies around chemical safety, process safety, flammable materials storage and handling, and emergency response strategies. A proven understanding of ergonomics, materials handling, lockout/tagout, confined spaces, and permit-to-work systems is helpful. 

  • Develop facilitate, and promote employee safety improvement (Kaizen events, safety councils, and safety meetings).

  • Communicate and coordinate guidelines for employee and contractor safety awareness.

  • Recommend improvements and standardization to practices and procedures to ensure safe and healthy work conditions and maintain right to operate (environmental compliance).

  • Conduct and/or review job safety analyses of fabrication, packaging, and maintenance work areas and processes to identify and mitigate EHS issues, such as chemical, biological, physical and musculoskeletal stresses. Provides compliance advice for hazard prevention and risk-control principles and strategies.

  • Complete regulatory submissions, notifications, etc. required to maintain compliance with federal, state, and local EHS requirements. Interact with EHS agency for inspections and regulatory advocacy.

  • Drive EHS audit program to examine compliance with regulations and conformance with corporate standards and other related commitments. Ensure the tracking to closure of corrective and improvement actions taken in response to audit findings. Perform data analysis of the results.

  • Lead and coordinate training programs to increase proficiency in EHS practices and promote awareness.

  • Document and maintain required training records per organizational and corporate guidelines.

  • Lead specialized work streams or be called upon to assist in implementing or completing special EHS related projects, including for other locations within the company.

  • Keep the local operations team advised of their progress in implementing their safety program, interpret safety stats and give advice on how they can improve based on what you’re seeing, keep visible the performance metrics (leading and lagging indicators), monitoring results, etc. for organization’s EHS programs.

  • Must wear respirator for some required job functions.

  • The employee frequently is required to sit for prolonged periods.

  • The employee is occasionally required to stand, walk, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.

  • The employee must occasionally lift and/or move a minimum of 50 pounds.

  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus. 

  • The work environment of this position is non-climate controlled.

  • The employee may be exposed to moving mechanical parts. The noise level is usually moderate.

Pay Transparency:

The expected pre-tax pay for this position is

$58,000.00 - $97,000.00

Actual pay may differ depending on relevant factors such as prior experience and geographic location.
