Job Description

We have an exciting opportunity to be part of a collegial, creative, and driven Communication and Media Arts team. Reporting to the US Publisher for communication studies, this position is responsible for managing the global journalism studies and journalism practice textbook, professional, and supplementary books program, with some additional remit within media studies, media production, and mass communication.

The position involves commissioning new editions of key textbooks; organically growing the list with first editions, particularly for the US market; identifying and pursuing opportunities for books for the professional market; and maintaining the reputation of the list in the academic/scholarly market with our supplementary titles. This editor works with long-standing authors and will be expected to build new author relationships.

What you’ll be doing:

  • Meeting annual commissioning goals, with an emphasis on acquiring the above-mentioned kinds of texts
  • Meeting annual publishing goals by working with authors to help them meet manuscript submission deadlines and liaising with production and authors to meet production and publishing deadlines
  • Researching journalism course and professional trends, entailing conference attendance, particularly in the United States, and potential campus travel
  • Liaising with series editors and book authors, as well as marketing, production, and sales colleagues

Qualifications

What we're looking for:

  • Previous experience in academic publishing is ideal; commissioning experience in academic publishing would be an advantage
  • A self-starter who can work quickly and independently while liaising effectively with team members globally as well as a diverse and wide-ranging author base
  • Ability to assess proposals and evaluate proposal reviews with an eye to subject and list standards and course or professionals’ needs
  • Flexibility and creative thinking when faced with the occasional challenging editorial decision
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Strong organizational skills, with the capability of achieving challenging commissioning goals
  • Strong word processing, spreadsheet, and database skills
  • Financial focus and the ability to budget and analyze financial data

A background in media or journalism studies is not necessary but would be an advantage.
