Description of Work

This is an Engineering III position in the Signal Design Section and is responsible for the delivery of projects containing traffic signal designs. This position provides professional expertise in traffic signal design, materials and contract administration and assists in solving complex traffic engineering problems. This position performs periodic onsite evaluations related to signal operations and makes recommendations for traffic signal and intersection improvements. This position assists managers/supervisors in the preparation of manpower reports. This position monitors project workload to meet deadlines, goals and objectives for traffic signal plans, specifications and estimates (PS&E) performed in-house and by private engineering firms (PEFs). This position coordinates PEF signal design contracts. This position provides input regarding design standards for quality of work and performs final technical reviews of traffic signal PS&E with the authority to accept or reject PS&E. This position serves as a technical authority on the interpretation and administration of traffic signal PS&E for field personnel before and during traffic signal construction. This position schedules/coordinates work assignments and reviews/approves work output of personnel assigned to the Eastern Signals Region.
The chosen candidate must be able to legally operate a motor vehicle.

Knowledge Skills and Abilities/Management Preferences

Salary Grade and Pay Range:  NC20 $70,478-$123,336

Management prefers applicants with the following:

  • Knowledge of the principles and practices of civil engineering as it relates to design, construction and maintenance of traffic signals.
  • Experience planning, developing, scheduling, tracking and completing projects independently or with limited supervision.
  • Demonstrated ability to work with, collaborate with and lead other engineers in the development of technical drawings and specifications.
  • Experience in computer office software and drafting software such as OpenRoads Designer CADD, Microsoft Word and Microsoft Excel.
  • Experience analyzing technical data to make recommendations.

Minimum Education and Experience

Bachelor's degree in an applicable field of engineering from an appropriately accredited institution and four (4) years of progressively responsible experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Necessary Special Requirements

May require registration as a professional engineer by the North Carolina Board of Examiners for Engineers and Surveyors.
